Introduction 1

This bible study includes every verse that contains a translation of the Hebrew word רוּח (Htr. ruach) which means Spirit in the Old Testament. To obtain a true understanding of this word these scriptures need to be meditated on and notes made of their meaning in different contexts. This requires putting scriptures together where they seem to have a similar meaning, and then meditating even more. The truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Wherever this word ruach appears in the Hebrew, the translation of it is highlighted with bold type and underline. In Hebrew the suffixes and some prepositions are added to the basic word to enhance the meaning, and where this has been done the meaning of the suffix or preposition has been included in highlighted text. 15 And when the sons of the prophets who were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.
16 And they said to him, Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray you, and seek your master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, You shall not send.

3:19 For that which befalls the sons of men befalls beasts; even one thing befalls them: as the one dies, so the other dies; yes, they all have one breath; so that a man has no pre-eminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
20 All go to one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
21 Who knows the spirit of man that goes upward, and the spirit of the beast that goes downward to the earth?
Ecclesiastes 4:4 Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.
16 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
5:16 (15) And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit has he who has laboured for the wind?

14 The LORD has mingled a perverse spirit in its midst: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work of it, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

Malachi 2:15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the remainder of the spirit. And why one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
16 For the LORD, the God of Israel, says that he hates putting away: for one covers violence with his garment, says the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.
