שְׁאוֹל (Htr. sheol) for Hell and the Grave (Strongs 7585)

Introduction 1

This bible study includes every verse that contains a translation of the Hebrew word שְׁאוֹל (Htr. sheol) which means Hell or the Grave in the Old Testament. To obtain a true understanding of this word these scriptures need to be meditated on and notes made of their meaning in different contexts. This requires putting scriptures together where they seem to have a similar meaning, and then meditating even more. The truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Wherever this word sheol appears in the Hebrew, the translation of it is highlighted with bold type and underline. In Hebrew the suffixes and some prepositions are added to the basic word to enhance the meaning, and where this has been done the meaning of the suffix or preposition has been included in highlighted text. Genesis 37:35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave to my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
42:38 And he said, My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befall him by the way in the which you go, then shall you bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
44:29 And if you take this also from me, and mischief befall him, you shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
44:30 Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad’s life;
31 It shall come to pass, when he sees that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and your servants shall bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to the grave.

Numbers 16:30 But if the LORD does a new thing, and the earth opens her mouth, and swallows them up, with all that pertain to them, and they go down alive into the pit; then you shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

Isaiah 5:14 Therefore hell has enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he who rejoices, shall descend into it.

32:27 And they shall not lie with the mighty who are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

Hosea 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be your plagues; O grave, I will be your destruction: repentance shall be hid from my eyes.

Amos 9:2 Though they dig into hell, from ther shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there will I bring them down:

Jonah 2:2 And said, I cried by reason of my affliction to the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell I cried, and you heard my voice.

Habakkuk 2:5 Yes also, because he transgresses by wine, he is a proud man, neither does he keep at home, who enlarges his desire as hell, and is as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathers to him all nations, and heaps to him all people:
