MATTHEW CHAPTER 20

Latin VulgateGreek Textus ReceptusEnglish King James
Matthew 20:1 Simile est regnum cælorum homini patrifamilias, qui exiit primo mane conducere operarios in vineam suam. Matthew 20:1 ὁμοία γάρ ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ Matthew 20:1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
20:2 συμφωνήσας δὲ μετὰ τῶν ἐργατῶν ἐκ δηναρίου τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ 20:2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
20:3 Et egressus circa horam tertiam, vidit alios stantes in foro otiosos, 20:3 καὶ ἐξελθὼν περὶ τὴν τρίτην ὥραν εἶδεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀργούς 20:3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
20:4 κἀκείνοις εἶπεν ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον δώσω ὑμῖν οἵ δέ ἀπῆλθόν 20:4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.
20:5 πάλιν ἐξελθὼν περὶ ἕκτην καὶ ἐννάτην ὥραν ἐποίησεν ὡσαύτως 20:5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
20:6 Circa undecimam vero exiit, et invenit alios stantes, et dicit illis: Quid hic statis tota die otiosi? 20:6 περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἀργούς καὶ λέγει αὖτοῖς τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί 20:6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
20:7 Dicunt ei: Quia nemo nos conduxit. Dicit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam. 20:7 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἡμᾶς ἐμισθώσατο λέγει αὐτοῖς ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ ὁ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον λήψεσθε 20:7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
20:8 ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης λέγει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τῷ ἐπιτρόπῳ αὐτοῦ κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος αὐτοῖς τὸν μισθὸν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων 20:8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
20:9 καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἔλαβον ἀνὰ δηνάριον 20:9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.
Matthew 20:10 ἐλθόντες δὲ οἱ πρῶτοι ἐνόμισαν ὅτι πλεῖονα λήψονται καὶ ἔλαβον καὶ αὐτοί ἀνὰ δηνάριον Matthew 20:10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.
20:11 Et accipientes murmurabant adversus patremfamilias, 20:11 λαβόντες δὲ ἐγόγγυζον κατὰ τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου 20:11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
20:12 λέγοντες ὅτι οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι μίαν ὥραν ἐποίησαν καὶ ἴσους ἡμῖν αὐτοὺς ἐποίησας τοῖς βαστάσασιν τὸ βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν καύσωνα 20:12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
20:13 At ille respondens uni eorum, dixit: Amice, non facio tibi injuriam: nonne ex denario convenisti mecum? 20:13 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν ἑνὶ αὐτῶν ἑταῖρε οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε οὐχὶ δηναρίου συνεφώνησάς μοι 20:13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?
20:14 ἆρον τὸ σὸν καὶ ὕπαγε θέλω δὲ τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ δοῦναι ὡς καὶ σοί 20:14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
20:15 ἢ οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι ποιῆσαι ὃ θέλω ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς εἰ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρός ἐστιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀγαθός εἰμι 20:15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?
20:16 Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi. Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi. 20:16 οὕτως ἔσονται οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι πολλοὶ γὰρ εἰσιν κλητοί ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
20:17 Et ascendens Jesus Jerosolymam, assumpsit duodecim discipulos secreto, et ait illis: 20:17 καὶ ἀναβαίνων ὁ ἰησοῦς εἰς ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς κατ᾽ ἰδίαν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς 20:17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,
20:18 Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte, 20:18 ἰδού ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν θανάτῳ 20:18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,
20:19 καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἀναστήσεται 20:19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.
Matthew 20:20 τότε προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν ζεβεδαίου μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῆς προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι παρ᾽ αὐτοῦ Matthew 20:20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
20:21 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ τί θέλεις λέγει αὐτῷ εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν σου καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου 20:21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
20:22 Respondens autem Jesus, dixit: Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? Dicunt ei: Possumus. 20:22 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ὃ ἐγὼ μέλλω πίνειν καὶ τὸ βάπτισμα ὁ ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθῆναι λέγουσιν αὐτῷ δυνάμεθα 20:22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
20:23 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου πίεσθε καὶ τὸ βάπτισμα ὃ ἐγὼ βαπτίζομαι βαπτισθήσεσθε τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων μου οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν δοῦναι ἀλλ᾽ οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός μου 20:23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
20:24 καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ δέκα ἠγανάκτησαν περὶ τῶν δύο ἀδελφῶν 20:24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
20:25 ὁ δὲ ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν 20:25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
20:26 Non ita erit inter vos: sed quicumque voluerit inter vos major fieri, sit vester minister: 20:26 οὐχ οὕτως δέ ἔσται ἐν ὑμῖν ἀλλ᾽ ὃς ἐὰν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν μέγας γενέσθαι ἔστω ὑμῶν διάκονος 20:26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
20:27 καὶ ὃς ἐὰν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος ἔστω ὑμῶν δοῦλος 20:27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
20:28 Sicut Filius hominis non venit ministrari, sed ministrare, et dare animam suam redemptionem pro multis. 20:28 ὥσπερ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
20:29 Et egredientibus illis ab Jericho, secuta est eum turba multa, 20:29 καὶ ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ ἰεριχὼ ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς 20:29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
Matthew 20:30 et ecce duo cæci sedentes secus viam audierunt quia Jesus transiret: et clamaverunt, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David. Matthew 20:30 καὶ ἰδού δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἰησοῦς παράγει ἔκραξαν λέγοντες ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς κύριε υἱὸς δαβίδ Matthew 20:30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
20:31 Turba autem increpabat eos ut tacerent. At illi magis clamabant, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David. 20:31 ὁ δὲ ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σιωπήσωσιν οἱ δὲ μεῖζον ἔκραζον λέγοντες ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς κύριε υἱὸς δαβίδ 20:31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.
20:32 καὶ στὰς ὁ ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν 20:32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?
20:33 Dicunt illi: Domine, ut aperiantur oculi nostri. 20:33 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ κύριε ἵνα ἀνοιχθῶσιν ἡμῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοί 20:33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.
20:34 Misertus autem eorum Jesus, tetigit oculos eorum. Et confestim viderunt, et secuti sunt eum. 20:34 σπλαγχνισθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς ἥψατο τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέβλεψαν αὐτῶν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ 20:34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
