Introduction 2.1

This is a thorough Greek word study about the meaning of the Greek word πίστις, 'pistis' meaning Faith (Strong's 4102) in the New Testament. It gives every verse where the word 'pistis' appears. To obtain a true understanding of this word these scriptures need to be meditated on and notes made of their meaning in different contexts. This requires putting scriptures together where they seem to have a similar meaning, and then meditating even more. The truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Wherever this word pistis appears in the Greek, the translation of it is highlighted with bold and yellow. In Greek the suffixes and some prepositions are not added to the basic word to enhance the meaning, except for case endings, so the associated suffix or preposition has not been included in highlighted text. The exception is that we have included the definite article in the highlighted text when it has occurred, as this may be significant. When the article occurs in the Greek, but does not appear in the translation, it is indicated with a star like this;  *faith. Every blessing be to those who seek the truth of God's word.

#2.1 Scriptures for πίστις 'pistis' meaning 'Faith' Strong's 4102

6:5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:
6:6 Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.
6:7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
6:8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
11:24 For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith: and many people was added to the Lord.
13:8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
14:9 The same heard Paul speak: who steadfastly beholding him, and perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.
14:27 And when they came, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
15:9 And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by *faith.
16:5 And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.
17:31 Because he has appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he has ordained; and he has given proof to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead.
20:21 Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
24:24 And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
26:18 To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Romans 1:5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience of faith among all nations, for his name:
1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
1:12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
1:17 For in it is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
3:3 For what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ to all and upon all those who believe: for there is no difference:
3:25 Whom God has set forth to be a propitiation through *faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of the man of the faith of Jesus.
3:27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? No: but by the law of faith.
3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the works of the law.
3:29 Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:
3:30 Seeing it is one God, who shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through *faith.
3:31 Do we then make void the law through *faith? Let it not be: yes, we establish the law.
4:5 But to him who does not work, but believes on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
4:9 Is this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that *faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
4:11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all those who believe, though they are not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed to them also:
4:12 And the father of circumcision to those who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
4:14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, *faith is made void, and the promise made of no effect:
4:15 Because the law works wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
4:16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
4:17 (As it is written, I have made you a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickens the dead, and calls those things which be not as though they were.
4:18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall your seed be.
4:19 And being not weak in faith, he did not consider his own body now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, nor yet the deadness of Sara's womb:
4:20 He did not doubt in the promise of God with unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
5:1 Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
5:2 By whom also we have access by *faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
9:30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, who did not follow after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.
9:31 But Israel, who followed after the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness.
9:32 Why? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
10:6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaks like this, Do not say in your heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
10:7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
10:8 But what does it say? The word is near you, even in your mouth, and in your heart: that is, the word of *faith, which we preach;
10:17 So then *faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
11:20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by *faith. Do not be highminded, but fear:
12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to every man who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God has dealt to every man the measure of faith.
12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of *faith;
14:1 Receive him who is weak in the faith, but not to doubtful disputations.
14:22 Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in that thing which he allows.
14:23 And he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because it is not of faith: for whatever is not of faith is sin.
16:26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

1 Corinthians 2:5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and do not have love, I am nothing.
13:13 And now abides faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
15:14 And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is vain, and your faith is also vain.
15:17 And if Christ is not raised, your faith is vain; you are yet in your sins.
16:13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, quit yourselves like men, be strong.

2 Corinthians 1:24 Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by *faith you stand.
4:13 We having the same spirit of *faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore I have spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8:7 Therefore, as you abound in everything, in faith, and utterance, and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that you abound in this grace also.
10:15 Not boasting of things outside our measure, that is, of other men's labors; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
13:5 Examine yourselves, whether you are in the faith; prove your own selves. Do you not know your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except you are reprobates?

Galatians 1:23 But they had heard only, That he who persecuted us in times past now preaches the faith which once he destroyed.
2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
3:2 This only would I learn of you, Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3:5 Therefore, he who ministers the Spirit to you, and works miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3:8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel to Abraham, saying, In you shall all nations be blessed.
3:9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with the faith of Abraham.
3:10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
3:12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man who does them shall live in them.
3:13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one who hangs on a tree:
3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through *faith.
3:22 But the scripture has concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
3:23 But before the faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up to the faith which should afterwards be revealed.
3:24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
3:25 But after the faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
3:26 For you are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision avails any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which works by love.
5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good to all men, especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

Ephesians 1:15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love to all the saints,
2:8 For by grace are you saved through *faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
3:12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by *faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ:
6:16 Above all, taking the shield of *faith, with which you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
6:23 Peace be to the brothers, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Philippians 1:25 And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of *faith;
1:27 Only conduct yourselves worthily of the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand firm in one spirit, with one soul striving together in the faith of the gospel;
2:17 Yes, and if I am offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
3:9 And be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by *faith:

Colossians 1:4 Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love which you have to all the saints,
1:23 If you continue in the faith grounded and settled, and do not be moved away from the hope of the gospel, which you have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; of which I Paul am made a minister;
2:5 For though I am absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and seeing your order, and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
2:6 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him:
2:7 Being rooted and built up in him, and confirmed in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.
2:12 Buried with him in baptism, in which also you were raised with him through the faith of the working of God, who has raised him from the dead.

1 Thessalonians 1:3 Remembering without ceasing your work of faith, and labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of God and our Father;
1:8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith toward God is spread abroad; so that we do not need to speak anything.
3:2 And sent Timothy, our brother, and minister of God, and our fellow-labourer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith:
3:5 For this cause, when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter has tempted you, and our labor be in vain.
3:6 But now when Timothy came from you to us, and brought us good tidings of your faith and love, and that you have good remembrance of us always, desiring greatly to see us, as we also to see you:
3:7 Therefore, brothers, we were comforted over you in all our affliction and distress by your faith:
3:10 Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?
5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

2 Thessalonians 1:3 We are bound to thank God always for you, brothers, as it is fit, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all toward each other abounds;
1:4 So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your endurance and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure:
1:11 Therefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of his calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:
2:13 But we ought to give thanks always to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation in sanctification of the Spirit and faith of the truth:
3:2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men do not have *faith.

1 Timothy 1:2 To Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
1:4 Nor give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
1:5 Now the end of the commandment is love out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of non-hypocritical faith:
1:14 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
1:19 Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning *faith have made shipwreck:
2:7 To which I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and do not lie;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.
2:15 Nevertheless she shall be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith and love and holiness with sensibleness.
3:9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
3:13 For those who have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
4:1 Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of demons;
4:6 If you put the brothers in remembrance of these things, you shall be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good teaching, which you have closely followed.
4:12 Let no man despise your youth; but you be an example of the believers, in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
5:8 But if any does not provide for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.
5:12 Having condemnation, because they have cast off their first faith.
6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
6:11 But you, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
6:12 Fight the good fight of *faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you are also called, and have confessed a good confession before many witnesses.
6:21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

2 Timothy 1:5 When I call to remembrance the non-hypocritical faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in you also.
1:13 Hold firm the form of sound words, which you have heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
2:18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
2:22 Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, love, peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
3:10 But you have fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, *faith, longsuffering, love, patience,
3:15 And that from a child you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
4:7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

Titus 1:1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
1:4 To Titus, my own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
1:13 This witness is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;
2:2 That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in the faith, in love, in patience.
2:10 Not pilfering, but showing all good faith; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
3:15 All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in faith. Grace be with you all. Amen

Philemon 1:5 Hearing of your love and faith, which you have toward the Lord Jesus, and towards all saints;
1:6 That the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 4:2 For to us was the gospel preached, as well as to them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with *faith in those who heard it.
6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on to perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith towards God,
6:12 That you are not lazy, but followers of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
10:38 Now the righteous shall live by faith: but if he draws back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
10:39 But we are not of those who draw back into destruction; but of those of faith to saving the soul.
11:1 Now faith is the basis of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
11:2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
11:3 Through faith we understand that the ages were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
11:4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaks.
11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he who comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.
