Who is
Good Enough

for Heaven? |
Like most people, the man on the front page hoped to go to heaven when he
died. He thought that he would, because he saw himself as a good person,
and his good deeds would outweigh the bad.
He did not know
that God does not accept our self-righteousness as a means of salvation:
"We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags." (Isaiah 64:6).
"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us," (Titus 3:5).
"For by grace you are saved through faith; that is not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. Not of
works lest any man should boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9).
He did not know
that he had set aside God’s standard of judgement and set his own. He
had invented an idol God to suit himself:
"These men have set up their idols in their heart." (Ezekiel 14:3).
This was idolatry, and "no idolater has any
|
inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God." (Ephesians 5:5).
"Idolaters ... shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone." (Revelation 21:8) That’s Hell!
He did not know that God says we are all sinners: "All
have sinned and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23).
"If we say that we have not sinned, we make him (God) a liar, and his word is not in us." (1 John 1:10).
Again, the punishment for sin is to be cast into hell: "Whoever
was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire." (Revelation 20:15).
He did not know
that Jesus said: "It is necessary to be born again." (St. John 3:7).
And that if we are not born again we cannot enter the kingdom of God (St. John 3:5)
Jesus also said, "Heaven and
earth shall pass away, but my word shall not pass away." (Matthew 24:35).
And that the words which he spoke will judge us on the last day (St. John 12:48). |
Where does that leave you, dear reader? Have you also rejected God’s
standard to reach heaven, and set your own? If you have, I urge you to
turn from it before it is too late. God loves you, and has made a way
out for you through the sacrifice of his Son Jesus Christ on the cross.
"For God so loved the world
that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life." (St. John 3:16).
"Repent, and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of
sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38).
