This is a thorough bible study about the meaning of the Hebrew word רוּחַ, 'ruach' (Strong's 3707) translated Spirit. It gives every verse where the word 'ruach' appears in the Old Testament. To obtain a true understanding of this word these scriptures need to be meditated on and notes made of their meaning in different contexts. This requires putting scriptures together where they seem to have a similar meaning, and then meditating even more. The truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). 1:14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
1:17 And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.
2:11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.
2:17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is done under the sun is grievous to me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
2:26 For God gives to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Ecclesiastes 4:4 Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
4:6 Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.
4:16 There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.
5:16 (15) And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit has he who has laboured for the wind?
6:9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
7:8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning of it: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.
7:9 Do not be hasty in your spirit to be angry: for anger rests in the bosom of fools.
8:8 There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither has he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
10:4 If the spirit of the ruler rise up against you, do not leave your place; for yielding pacifies great offences.

11:5 As you do not know what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child: even so you do not know the works of God who makes all.
12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return to God who gave it.
Isaiah 4:4 When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from its midst by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
7:2 And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
11:2 And the spirit of Yahweh shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of Yahweh;
11:4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
15 And Yahweh shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dry shod.
17:13 The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
19:3 And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in its midst; and I will destroy its counsel: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to those who have familiar spirits, and to the wizards.
19:14 Yahweh has mingled a perverse spirit in its midst: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work of it, as a drunken man staggers in his vomit.
25:4 For you have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.
26:9 With my soul have I desired you in the night; yes, with my spirit within me will I seek you early: for when your judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
26:18 We have been with child, we have been in pain, we have as it were brought forth wind; we have not worked any deliverance in the earth; neither have the inhabitants of the world fallen.
Isaiah 27:8 In measure, when it shoots forth, you will debate with it: he stays his rough wind in the day of the east wind.
28:6 And for a spirit of judgment to him who sits in judgment, and for strength to those who turn the battle to the gate.
29:10 For Yahweh has poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and has closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers has he covered.
29:24 They also who erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and those who murmured shall learn doctrine.
30:1 Woe to the rebellious children, says Yahweh, who take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
30:28 And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err.
31:3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When Yahweh shall stretch out his hand, both he who helps shall fall, and he who is helped shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.
32:2 And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.
32:15 Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.
33:11 You shall conceive chaff, you shall bring forth stubble: your breath, as fire, shall devour you.
34:16 Seek out of the book of Yahweh, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it has commanded, and his spirit it has gathered them.
37:7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.
38:16 O Lord, by these things men live, and in all these things is the life of my spirit: so will you revive me, and make me to live.
40:7 The grass withers, the flower fades: because the spirit of Yahweh blows upon it: surely the people are grass.
41:16 You shall fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and you shall rejoice in Yahweh, and shall glory in the Holy One of Israel.
41:29 Behold, they are all vanity; their works are nothing: their melted images are wind and confusion.
42:1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; my elect, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
42:5 Thus says God Yahweh, he who created the heavens, and stretched them out; he who spread forth the earth, and that which comes out of it; he who gives breath to the people upon it, and spirit to those who walk in it:
Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him who is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon your seed, and my blessing upon your offspring:
48:16 Come near to me, hear this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord Yahweh, and his Spirit, has sent me.
54:6 For Yahweh has called you as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when you were refused, says your God.
57:13 When you cry, let your companies deliver you; but the wind shall carry them all away; vanity shall take them: but he who puts his trust in me shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain;
57:15 For thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
57:16 For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always angry: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.
59:19 So shall they fear the name of Yahweh from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of Yahweh shall lift up a standard against him.
59:21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, says Yahweh; My spirit that is upon you, and my words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your seed, nor out of the mouth of your seed’s seed, says Yahweh, from now on and for ever.
61:1 The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is upon me; because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good tidings to the meek; he has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
61:3 To appoint to those who mourn in Zion, to give to them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he might be glorified.
63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
63:11 Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he who put his holy Spirit within him?
63:14 As a beast goes down into the valley, the Spirit of Yahweh caused him to rest: so did you lead your people, to make yourself a glorious name.
64:6 (5) But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness is as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
65:14 Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but you shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.
66:2 For all those things has my hand made, and all those things have been, says Yahweh: but to this man will I look, even to him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembles at my word.
Jeremiah 2:24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffs up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all those who seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.
4:11 At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse,
4:12 Even a full wind from those places shall come to me: now also will I give sentence against them.
5:13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done to them.
10:13 When he utters his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightning with rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasures.

51:11 Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: Yahweh has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of Yahweh, the vengeance of his temple.

Ezekiel 1:4 And I looked, and, behold, a whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud, and a fire infolding itself, and a brightness was about it, and out of its midst as the colour of amber, out of the midst of the fire.
1:12 And they went every one straight forward: where the spirit was to go, they went; and they did not turn when they went.
1:20 Wherever the spirit was to go, they went, there was their spirit to go; and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
1:21 When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
2:2 And the spirit entered into me when he spoke to me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him who spoke to me.
3:12 Then the spirit took me up, and I heard behind me a voice of a great rushing, saying, Blessed be the glory of Yahweh from his place.
3:13 I heard also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another, and the noise of the wheels over against them, and a noise of a great rushing.
3:14 So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of Yahweh was strong upon me.
3:24 Then the spirit entered into me, and set me upon my feet, and spoke with me, and said to me, Go, shut yourself within your house.
5:2 You shall burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled: and you shall take a third part, and smite about it with a knife: and a third part you shall scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them.
5:10 Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of you, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments in you, and the whole remnant of you will I scatter into all the winds.
5:12 A third part of you shall die with the pestilence, and with famine shall they be consumed in the midst of you: and a third part shall fall by the sword round about you; and I will scatter a third part into all the winds, and I will draw out a sword after them.
8:3 And he put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a lock of my head; and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the door of the inner gate that looks toward the north; where was the seat of the image of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy.
8:17 When they stood, these stood; and when they were lifted up, these lifted up themselves also: for the spirit of the living creature was in them.
11:1 Moreover the spirit lifted me up, and brought me to the east gate of Yahweh's house, which looks eastward: and behold at the door of the gate five and twenty men; among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people.
11:5 And the Spirit of Yahweh fell upon me, and said to me, Speak; Thus says Yahweh; Thus have you said, O house of Israel: for I know the things that come into your mind, every one of them.
11:19 And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:
11:24 And a spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. So the vision that I had seen went up from me.
12:14 And I will scatter toward every wind all that are about him to help him, and all his bands; and I will draw out the sword after them.
13:3 Thus says the Lord Yahweh; Woe to the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!
13:11 Say to them which daub it with lime, that it shall fall: there shall be an overflowing shower; and you, O great hailstones, shall fall; and a stormy wind shall rend it.
13:13 Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh; I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in my anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it.
Ezekiel 17:10 Yes, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind touches it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew.
17:21 And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and those who remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and you shall know that I Yahweh have spoken it.
18:31 Cast away from you all your transgressions, by which you have transgressed; and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, O house of Israel?
19:12 But she was plucked up in fury, she was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods were broken and withered; the fire consumed them.
20:32 And that which comes into your mind shall not be at all, that you say, We will be as the heathen, as the families of the countries, to serve wood and stone.
21:7 And it shall be, when they say to you, Why do you sigh? that you shall answer, For the tidings; because it comes: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it comes, and shall be brought to pass, says the Lord Yahweh.
27:26 Thy rowers have brought you into great waters: the east wind has broken you in the midst of the seas.
36:26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
36:27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments, and do them.

37:8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.
37:9 Then he said to me, Prophesy to the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus says the Lord Yahweh; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
37:10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.
37:14 And shall put my spirit in you, and you shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall you know that I Yahweh have spoken it, and performed it, says Yahweh.
39:29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord Yahweh.
42:16 He measured the east side with the measuring reed, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.
42:17 He measured the north side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed round about.
42:18 He measured the south side, five hundred reeds, with the measuring reed.
42:19 He turned about to the west side, and measured five hundred reeds with the measuring reed.

43:5 So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of Yahweh filled the house.
Daniel 2:1 And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, by which his spirit was troubled, and his sleep went from him.
2:2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, to show the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.
2:3 And the king said to them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream.
8:8 Therefore the he goat grew very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.
11:4 And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up, even for others beside those.
Hosea 4:12 My people ask counsel at their stocks, and their staff declares to them: for the spirit of fornication has caused them to err, and they have gone fornicating from under their God.
4:19 The wind has bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
5:4 They will not frame their doings to turn to their God: for the spirit of fornication is in the midst of them, and they have not known Yahweh.
8:7 For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it has no stalk: the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.
9:7 The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man (Lit. The man of the spirit) is mad, for the multitude of your iniquity, and the great hatred.
12:1 Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and desolation; and they make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.
13:15 Though he is fruitful among his brethren, an east wind shall come, the wind of Yahweh shall come up from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry, and his fountain shall be dried up: he shall plunder the treasure of all pleasant vessels.
Joel 2:28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
2:29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
Amos 4:13 For, lo, he who forms the mountains, and creates the wind, and declares to man what is his thought, that makes the morning darkness, and treads upon the high places of the earth, Yahweh, The God of hosts, is his name.
Jonah 1:4 But Yahweh sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken.
4:8 And it came to pass, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.
Micah 2:7 O you who are named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of Yahweh straitened? are these his doings? do not my words do good to him who walks uprightly?
2:11 If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood do lie, saying, I will prophesy to you of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.
3:8 But truly I am full of power by the spirit of Yahweh, and of judgment, and of might, to declare to Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin.
Habakkuk 1:11 Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, imputing this his power to his god.
2:19 Woe to him who says to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
Haggai 1:14 And Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of Yahweh of hosts, their God,
2:5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt, so my spirit remains among you: do not fear.
Zechariah 2:6 Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, says Yahweh: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, says Yahweh.
4:6 Then he answered and spoke to me, saying, This is the word of Yahweh to Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says Yahweh of hosts.
5:9 Then lifted I up my eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.
6:5 And the angel answered and said to me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.
6:8 Then cried he upon me, and spoke to me, saying, Behold, these that go toward the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.
7:12 Yes, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which Yahweh of hosts has sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore a great wrath came from Yahweh of hosts.
12:1 The burden of the word of Yahweh for Israel, says Yahweh, who stretches forth the heavens, and lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him.
12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and they shall be in bitterness for him, as one who is in bitterness for his firstborn.
13:2 And it shall come to pass in that day, says Yahweh of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land.
Malachi 2:15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the remainder of the spirit. And why one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
2:16 For Yahweh, the God of Israel, says that he hates putting away: for one covers violence with his garment, says Yahweh of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.
