INTRODUCTION

This study explains the uses of sixteen Greek prepositions and which cases the govern in Logos Apostolic Greek interlinear. They are listed in the order of most occurrences first.

1. ἐν Strong's 1722 - 2713 Occurrences

A preposition used only with the Dative case in the following ways.

1. WITH DATIVE.

1. SPATIAL: in, and various others.
2. TEMPORAL: Usually a point in time - in, within, when, while, during.
3. ASSOCIATION: with.
4. CAUSE: Because of.
5. INSTRUMENTAL: by, with, using.
6. REFERENCE: with reference to.
7. RESPECT: with respect to.
8. MANNER: with.
9. POSSESSION: with (concerning what possesses someone).
10. WITH VERBS OF MOTION: into, towards (equivalent to εἰς).

2. εἰς Strong's 1519 - 1753 Occurrences

A preposition used only with the Accusative case in the following ways.

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

1. SPATIAL: into, towards, in.
2. TEMPORAL: Usually a whole period of time - for, throughout.
3. PURPOSE: for, in order to, to.
4. RESULT: so that, with the result that.
5. REFERENCE: with reference to.
6. RESPECT: with respect to.
7. ADVANTAGE: for.
8. DISADVANTAGE: against.
9. WITH VERBS OF NO MOTION: in (equivalent to ἐν).

3. ἐκ Strong's 1537 - 915 Occurrences

A preposition used only with the Genitive case in the following ways.

1. WITH GENITIVE.

1. SOURCE: out of, out from.
2. SEPARATION: from, away from.
3. TEMPORAL: from, from (this point) .... onwards.
5. PARTITIVE: of
6. MEANS: by, from.

4. ἐπὶ Strong's 1909 - 878 Occurrences

A preposition used with the Accusative, Genitive and Dative cases in the following ways.

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. SPATIAL: on, upon, against, onto, into.
b. TEMPORAL: for, over a period of.

2. WITH GENITIVE.

a. SPATIAL: on, upon, at, near.
b. TEMPORAL: in the time of, during.
c. CAUSE: on the basis of.

3. WITH DATIVE.

a. SPATIAL: on, upon, at, near, in, among, to.
b TEMPORAL: at, at the time of, in.
c. CAUSE: because of, on the basis of, in.
d. INSTRUMENTAL: by, with, using.

5. πρὸς Strong's 4314 - 696 Occurrences

A preposition used almost exclusively with the Accusative case in the following ways.

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. PURPOSE: for, for the purpose of.
b. SPATIAL: to, towards.
c. TEMPORAL: towards, for (duration).
d. RESULT: so that, with the result that.
e. OPPOSITION: against.
f. ASSOCIATION: with, in company with.

2. WITH GENITIVE.

a. BENEFIT: for (only Acts 27:34).

3. WITH DATIVE.

a. SPATIAL: at, by, near.

6.διὰ Strong's 1233 - 666 Occurrences

A preposition used with the Accusative and Genitive cases in the following ways.

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. CAUSE: because of, on account of, for the sake of.
b. SPATIAL: through.

2. WITH GENITIVE.

a. AGENCY: by, through.
b. MEANS: through.
c. SPATIAL: through.
d. TEMPORAL: through, during.

7. ἀπὸ Strong's 575 - 645 Occurrences

A fairly common preposition used only with the Genitive case in the following ways.

1. WITH GENITIVE.

a. SEPARATION: from, away from.
b. SOURCE: from, out from, out of.
c. CAUSE: because of.
d. PARITIVE: of.
e. AGENCY: by, from.

8. κατὰ Strong's 2596 - 471 Occurrences

A preposition used with the Accusative and Genitive cases in the following ways.

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. STANDARD: according to, corresponding to, concerning.
b. SPATIAL: along, through, towards, up to.
c. TEMPORAL: at, on, during.
d. RESULT: so that, with the result that.
e. PURPOSE: for the purpose of.
f. REFERENCE: with reference to.
g. RESPECT: with respect to.

2. WITH GENITIVE

a. SPATIAL: down from, throughout.
b. OPPOSITION: against.
c. SOURCE: from.

9. μετὰ Strong's 3326 - 467 Occurrences

A preposition used with the Accusative and Genitive cases in the following ways.

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. TEMPORAL: after, behind.
b. SPATIAL: after, behind.

2. WITH GENITIVE.

a. ASSOCIATION: with, in company with.
b. SPATIAL: with, among.
c. MANNER: with.

10. περὶ Strong's 4012 - 331 Occurrences

A preposition used with the Accusative and Genitive cases in the following ways.

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. SPATIAL: around, near.
b. TEMPORAL: about, near.
c. REFERENCE/RESPECT: with reference or regard to.

2. WITH GENITIVE.

a. REFERENCE: concerning.
b. ADVANTAGE/REPRESENTATION: on behalf of, for.

11. ὑπὸ Strong's 5259 - 217 Occurrences

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. SPATIAL: under, below.
b. SUBORDINATION: under (the authority of).

2. WITH GENITIVE

a. ULTIMATE AGENCY: by.
b. INTERMEDIATE AGENCY: through.
c. MEANS: by.

12. παρὰ Strong's 3844 - 191 Occurrences

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. SPATIAL: by, alongside, near, on.
b. COMPARISON: in comparison to, more than.
c. OPPOSITION: against, contrary to.

2. WITH GENITIVE.

a. SPATIAL: from (the side of).
b. AGENCY: from, by.

3. WITH DATIVE.

a. SPATIAL: near, beside.
b. SPHERE: in the sight of, before (someone).
c. ASSOCIATION: with.
d. Equivalent to simple dative.

13. ὑπὲρ Strong's 5228 - 645 Occurrences

1. WITH ACCUSATIVE.

a. SPATIAL: over, above.
b. COMPARISON: more than, beyond.

2. WITH GENITIVE.

a. ADVANTAGE/REPRESENTATION: on behalf of, for, for the sake of.
b. REFERENCE: with reference to, concerning (equal to περὶ).
c. SUBSTITUTION: in place of, instead of (equal to ἀντὶ).

14. σὺν Strong's 4862 - 127 Occurrences

1. WITH DATIVE

a. ASSOCIATION: with, in association with.

15. πρὸ Strong's 4253 - 47 Occurrences

1. WITH GENITIVE

a. SPATIAL: before, in front of, at.
b. TEMPORAL: before.
c. PRIORITY: before.

16. ἀντὶ Strong's 473 - 22 Occurrences

a. SUBSTITUTION: for, instead of, in place of.
b, EXCHANGE: for, as, in the place of.
c. CAUSE: ἀνθ ὧν because.

17. ἀνὰ Strong's 303 - 13 Occurrences

a. DISTRIBUTIVE: each, apiece, by.
b. SPATIAL: In composition - up, upwards, above, from above.

18. μεταξὺ Strong's 3342 - 8 Occurrences

a. SPATIAL: between.
b. AS AN ADVERB: in the meant while.

19. ἄνευ Strong's 427 - 3 Occurrences

1. WITH GENITIVE

a. ASSOCIATION: without.
