Introduction 1.1

This is a word study about the meaning of the Hebrew word חֹרֵב, 'chorev' translated 'Horeb' in the Old Testament, and gives every verse where the Hebrew word "chorev" appears. To obtain a true understanding of this word these scriptures need to be meditated on and notes made of their meaning in different contexts. This requires putting scriptures together where they seem to have a similar meaning, and then meditating even more. Exodus 3:1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
3:2 And the angel of Yahweh appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
17:5 And Yahweh said to Moses, Go on before the people, and take with you of the elders of Israel; and your rod, with which you struck the river, take in your hand, and go.
17:6 Behold, I will stand before you there upon the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
33:6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
33:7 And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it outside the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one who sought Yahweh went out to the tabernacle of the congregation, which was outside the camp.

Deuteronomy 1:1 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain opposite the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
1:2 (There are eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.)
1:3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that Yahweh had given him in commandment to them;
1:4 After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei:
1:5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses began to declare this law, saying,
1:6 Yahweh our God spoke to us in Horeb, saying, You have dwelt long enough in this mount:
1:18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.
1:19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which you saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as Yahweh our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
4:10 Specially the day that you stood before Yahweh your God in Horeb, when Yahweh said to me, Gather the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
4:11 And you came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire to the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
4:12 And Yahweh spoke to you out of the midst of the fire: you heard the voice of the words, but saw no likeness; only you heard a voice.
4:13 And he declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tablets of stone.
4:14 And Yahweh commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it.
4:15 Therefore take good heed to yourselves; for you saw no manner of likeness on the day that Yahweh spoke to you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
4:16 Lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourselves a graven image, the likeness of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
5:1 And Moses called all Israel, and said to them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that you may learn them, and keep, and do them.
5:2 Yahweh our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
5:3 Yahweh did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
9:8 Also in Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, so that Yahweh was angry with you to have destroyed you.
9:9 When I had gone up into the mount to receive the tablets of stone, even the tablets of the covenant which Yahweh made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither ate bread nor drink water:
9:10 And Yahweh delivered to me two tablets of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which Yahweh spoke with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly.
9:11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that Yahweh gave me the two tablets of stone, even the tablets of the covenant.
18:15 Yahweh your God will raise up for you a Prophet from the midst of you, of your brethren, like me; to him you shall hear;
18:16 According to all that you desired of Yahweh your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Do not let me hear again the voice of Yahweh my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, so that I do not die.
29:1 These are the words of the covenant, which Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which he made with them in Horeb.

1 Kings 8:9 There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when Yahweh made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt.
19:8 And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.

2 Chronicles 5:10 There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets which Moses put in there at Horeb, when Yahweh made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt.

Psalm 106:19 They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.

Malachi 4:4 Remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
