#8.1 Baptized into Jesus Christ

Greek - Romans 6:3-4 - English
ἢ ἀγνοεῖτε ὅτι ὅσοι ἐβαπτίσθημεν εἰς Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν εἰς τὸν θάνατον αὐτοῦ ἐβαπτίσθημεν 3 Do you not know, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
συνετάφημεν οὖν αὐτῷ διὰ τοῦ βαπτίσματος εἰς τὸν θάνατον ἵνα ὥσπερ ἠγέρθη Χριστὸς ἐκ νεκρῶν διὰ τῆς δόξης τοῦ πατρός οὕτως καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐν καινότητι ζωῆς περιπατήσωμεν 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

Greek - Galatians 3:27 - English
ὅσοι γὰρ εἰς Χριστὸν ἐβαπτίσθητε Χριστὸν ἐνεδύσασθε 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Note: This is a bible study about what it means to be baptized into Jesus Christ and into his death. To be baptized into Christ can not only mean to be baptized into his body (See #7), which is the church, but it can also mean to be baptized into his teachings, or into his character. Compare how the Israelites were "all baptized into (Gr. εἰς) Moses in the cloud and in the sea;" (1 Corinthians 10:2). Does it mean that they were baptized in Moses name? No, they were symbolically baptized into his teachings, which was the law. The real process of baptism, being submerged in his teachings about the law, and conforming their lives to it, should have taken place during their time in the wilderness. When the Israelites crossed the red sea, their enemies (the Egyptians) that brought them into bondage were totally destroyed, and they were completely set free from serving them. So when we are baptized, "the body of sin" (Romans 6:6), which brings us into the bondage of sin (John 8:34), is destroyed (Romans 6:6), and we are set free from sin (Romans 6:7). This is brought about by our total obedience to God's word from the heart (Romans 6:16-18), which is what the process of baptism is meant to produce in us. Being baptized into Moses meant to be associated with him and all that he stood for, which was the teachings of the law; and being baptized into Christ means to be associated with him, and all that he stands for, which is his teachings of the word of God. So as we study the word of God, and put it into practice in our lives, we are being baptized deeper into Christ in a spiritual sense.

#8.2 Baptized into his Death

Note: Just before Jesus went to the cross to die, he said, "I have a baptism to be baptized with;" (Luke 12:50), talking about his coming crucifixion. His death, burial, and resurrection, were a type of baptism. Going down into the water represents dying, going under the water represents burial, and coming out of the water represents resurrection.  All Christians have been called to follow Jesus by taking up our crosses, totally denying ourselves, and following him.

(Matthew 8:22) "But Jesus said to him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."
(Matthew 10:38) "And he who does not take his cross, and follow after me, is not worthy of me."
(Matthew 16:24) "Then said Jesus to his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."
(Matthew 19:21) "Jesus said to him, If you will be perfect, go and sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me."
(Mark 8:34) "And when he had called the people to him with his disciples also, he said to them, Whoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."
(Mark 10:21) "Then Jesus looking at him loved him, and said to him, One thing you lack: go your way, sell whatever you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me."
(Luke 9:23) "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me."
(Luke 14:27) "And whoever does not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple."
(Luke 18:22) "Now when Jesus heard these things, he said to him, Yet lack you one thing: sell all what you have, and distribute to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me."

By doing this, our "old man" (which is self) becomes crucified, and we become buried with him by baptism into death (Romans 6:4).
