Introduction 2.2

This is a thorough Greek word study about the meaning of the Greek word πνεῦμα, 'pneuma' (Strong's 4151) translated 'spirit'. It gives every verse where the Greek word πνεῦμα 'pneuma' for 'Spirit' appears in the New Testament from Romans to Revelation. To obtain a true understanding of this word these scriptures need to be meditated on and notes made of their meaning in different contexts. This requires putting scriptures together where they seem to have a similar meaning, and then meditating even more. The truth will be revealed by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Wherever this word pneuma appears in the Greek, the translation of it is highlighted with yellow. In Greek , with the exception of case endings, the suffixes and prepositions are not added to the basic word as in Hebrew, so these have not been included in highlighted text. Every blessing be to those who seek the truth of God's word.

#2.2 Scriptures for πνεῦμα 'pneuma' meaning 'Spirit' Strong's 4151

Romans 1:4 And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
1:9 For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
2:29 But he is a Jew, who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
5:5 And hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given to us.
7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead in which we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
8:5 For those who are according to the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but those who are according to the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
8:6 For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the spirit is life and peace.
8:7 Because the mind of the flesh is enmity to God: for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.
8:8 So then those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
8:9 But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his.
Romans 8:10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
8:11 But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he who raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwells in you.
8:12 Therefore, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
8:13 For if you live according to the flesh, you shall die: but if you through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, you shall live.
8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
8:15 For you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but you have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
8:16 The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself makes intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered.
8:27 And he who searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
9:1 I say the truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit,
11:8 (According as it is written, God has given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) to this day.
12:11 Not lazy in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;
14:17 For the kingdom of God is not food and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
15:16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
15:19 Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about to Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ.
15:30 Now I entreat you, brothers, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;

1 Corinthians 2:4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:
2:10 But God has revealed them to us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
2:11 For what man knows the things of a man, except the spirit of man which is in him? even so no one knows the things of God, except the Spirit of God.
2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
2:13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teaches, but which the Holy Spirit teaches; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness to him: nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
4:21 What do you want? shall I come to you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?
5:3 For I indeed, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him who has so done this deed,
5:4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5:5 To deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
6:11 And such were some of you: but you are washed, but you are sanctified, but you are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
6:17 But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit.
6:19 What? do you do not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have of God, and you are not your own?
6:20 For you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
6:34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she who is married cares for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.
6:40 But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians 12:3 Therefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Spirit.
12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit for all.
12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another various kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
12:11 But all these works that one and the very same Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
12:12 For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptised into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
14:2 For he who speaks in an unknown tongue speaks not to men, but to God: for no man understands him ; however in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
14:12 Even so you, forasmuch as you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that you may excel to the edifying of the church.
14:13 Therefore let him who speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.
14:15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
14:16 Else when you shall bless with the spirit, how shall he who occupies the room of the unlearned say Amen at your giving of thanks, seeing he does not understand what you say?
14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a life-giving spirit.
16:18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge you those who are such.

2 Corinthians 1:22 Who has also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
2:13 I had no rest in my spirit, because I did not find Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from there into Macedonia.
3:3 Forasmuch as you are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.
3:6 Who also has made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life.
3:8 How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?
3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
3:18 But we all, with open face looking as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by theSpirit of the Lord.
4:13 We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore I have spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
5:5 Now he who has worked on us for the very same thing is God, who also has given to us the earnest of the Spirit.
6:6 By pureness, by knowledge, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Spirit, by love unfeigned,
7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
7:13 Therefore we were comforted in your comfort: yes, and we rejoiced more abundantly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit was refreshed by you all.
11:4 For if he who comes preaches another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if you receive another spirit, which you have not received, or another gospel, which you have not accepted, you might well bear with him.
12:18 I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. Did Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. Amen

Galatians 3:2 This only would I learn of you, Received you the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3:3 Are you so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are you now made perfect by the flesh?
3:4 Have you suffered so many things in vain? if it is yet in vain.
3:5 He therefore who ministers to you the Spirit, and works miracles among you, does he do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?
3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
4:29 But as then he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.
5:5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
5:17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that you cannot do the things that you would.
5:18 But if you are led of the Spirit, you are not under the law.
5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in a fault, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering yourself, lest you also are tempted.
6:8 For he who sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
6:18 Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Ephesians 1:13 In whom you also trusted, after that you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that you believed, you were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
2:2 Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience:
2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
2:22 In whom you also are built together for a habitation of God through the Spirit.
3:5 Which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it is now revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;
4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as you are called in one hope of your calling;
4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby you are sealed for the day of redemption.
5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

Philippians 1:19 For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
1:27 Only conduct yourselves worthily of the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one soul striving together for the faith of the gospel;
2:1 If there is therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,
3:3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

2:5 For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and seeing your order, and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.

1 Thessalonians 1:5 For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance; as you know what manner of men we were among you for your sake.
1:6 And you became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit:
4:8 He therefore that despises, despises not man, but God, who has also given to us his holy Spirit.
5:19 Quench not the Spirit.
5:23 And may the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:2 That you are not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is near.
2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
2:13 But we are bound to give thanks always to God for you, brothers beloved of the Lord, because God has from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:

1 Timothy 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
4:1 Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of demons;

1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation?
2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will?
3:7 Therefore (as the Holy Spirit says, To day if you will hear his voice,
4:12 For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of both soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
6:4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
9:8 The Holy Spirit this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:
9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
10:15 Of which the Holy Spirit also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose you, shall he be thought worthy, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and has counted the blood of the covenant, with which he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and has done despite to the Spirit of grace?
12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?

1:22 Having purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit into genuine love of the brothers, see that you love one another with a pure heart fervently:
3:4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
3:18 For Christ also has once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
3:19 By which also he went and preached to the spirits in prison;
4:6 For this cause was the gospel preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

1 John 3:24 And he who keeps his commandments dwells in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit which he has given us.
4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
4:2 Hereby do you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
4:3 And every spirit that does not confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, of which you have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4:6 We are of God: he who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
5:6 This is he who came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.

1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
2:7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches; To him who overcomes will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches; He who overcomes shall not be hurt of the second death.
2:17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches; To him who overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows except he who receives it.
2:29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
3:1 And to the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things says he who has the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know your works, that you have a name that you live, and are dead.
3:6 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
3:13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
3:22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
4:2 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.
4:5 And out of the throne proceeded lightning and thundering and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

21:10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him who hears say, Come. And let him who is thirsty come. And whoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
