KAL Infinitive
Introduction 1.02
In numerous places in this section the Kal Infinitive is translated "surely", as in "You shall surely die." This is not a literal translation, which would be something like, "Dying you shall die," or "To die you shall die." Translators recognize that this is a Hebraic means of emphasis and therefore they translate the Infinitive as "surely", giving the meaning of the phrase.
Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.
3:4 And the serpent said to the woman, You shall not surely die:
20:7 Now therefore restore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for you, and you shall live: and if you do not restore her you know that you shall surely die, you, and all who are yours.
