Luke Chapter 9

Greek Textus ReceptusEnglish King James
Luke 9:1 συγκαλεσάμενος δὲ τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς αὑτοῦ, ἔδωκεν αὐτοῖς δύναμιν καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ δαιμόνια καὶ νόσους θεραπεύειν Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
9:2 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς κηρύσσειν τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἰᾶσθαι τοὺς ἀσθενοῦντας 9:2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
9:3 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς μηδὲν αἴρετε εἰς τὴν ὁδόν μήτε ῥάβδους, μήτε πήραν μήτε ἄρτον μήτε ἀργύριον μήτε ἀνὰ δύο χιτῶνας ἔχειν 9:3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
9:4 καὶ εἰς ἣν ἂν οἰκίαν εἰσέλθητε ἐκεῖ μένετε καὶ ἐκεῖθεν ἐξέρχεσθε 9:4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
9:5 καὶ ὅσοι ἂν μὴ δέξωνταί ὑμᾶς ἐξερχόμενοι ἀπὸ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης καὶ τὸν κονιορτὸν ἀπὸ τῶν ποδῶν ὑμῶν ἀποτινάξατε εἰς μαρτύριον ἐπ᾽ αὐτούς 9:5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
9:6 ἐξερχόμενοι δὲ διήρχοντο κατὰ τὰς κώμας εὐαγγελιζόμενοι καὶ θεραπεύοντες πανταχοῦ 9:6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
9:7 ἤκουσεν δὲ ἡρῴδης ὁ τετράρχης τὰ γινόμενα ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ πάντα καὶ διηπόρει διὰ τὸ λέγεσθαι ὑπό τινων ὅτι ἰωάννης ἐγήγερται ἐκ νεκρῶν 9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
9:8 ὑπό τινων δὲ ὅτι ἠλίας ἐφάνη ἄλλων δὲ ὅτι προφήτης εἷς τῶν ἀρχαίων ἀνέστη 9:8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9:9 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἡρῴδης ἰωάννην ἐγὼ ἀπεκεφάλισα τίς δὲ ἐστιν οὗτος περὶ οὗ ἐγὼ ἀκούω τοιαῦτα καὶ ἐζήτει ἰδεῖν αὐτόν 9:9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
Luke 9:10 καὶ ὑποστρέψαντες οἱ ἀπόστολοι διηγήσαντο αὐτῷ ὅσα ἐποίησαν καὶ παραλαβὼν αὐτοὺς ὑπεχώρησεν κατ᾽ ἰδίαν εἰς τόπον ἔρημον πόλεως καλουμένης βηθσαϊδά Luke 9:10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
9:11 οἱ δὲ ὄχλοι γνόντες ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ καὶ δεξάμενος αὐτοὺς ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς περὶ τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τοὺς χρείαν ἔχοντας θεραπείας ἰᾶτο 9:11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
9:12 ἡ δὲ ἡμέρα ἤρξατο κλίνειν προσελθόντες δὲ οἱ δώδεκα εἶπον αὐτῷ ἀπόλυσον τὸν ὄχλον ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τὰς κύκλῳ κώμας καὶ τοῦς ἀγροὺς καταλύσωσιν καὶ εὕρωσιν ἐπισιτισμόν ὅτι ὧδε ἐν ἐρήμῳ τόπῳ ἐσμέν 9:12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.
9:13 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν οἱ δὲ εἶπον, οὐκ εἰσὶν ἡμῖν πλεῖον ἢ πέντε ἄρτοι καὶ δύο ἰχθύες εἰ μήτι πορευθέντες ἡμεῖς ἀγοράσωμεν εἰς πάντα τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον βρώματα 9:13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
9:14 ἦσαν γὰρ ὡσεὶ ἄνδρες πεντακισχίλιοι εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ κατακλίνατε αὐτοὺς κλισίας ἀνὰ πεντήκοντα 9:14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
9:15 καὶ ἐποίησαν οὕτως καὶ ἀνέκλιναν ἅπαντας 9:15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.
9:16 λαβὼν δὲ τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εὐλόγησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ κατέκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς παρατιθέναι τῷ ὄχλῳ 9:16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
9:17 καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν πάντες καὶ ἤρθη τὸ περισσεῦσαν αὐτοῖς κλασμάτων κόφινοι δώδεκα 9:17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
9:18 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτὸν προσευχόμενον κατὰμόνας, συνῆσαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς λέγων, τίνα με λέγουσιν οἱ ὄχλοι εἶναι 9:18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
9:19 οἱ δὲ ἀποκριθέντες εἶπον, ἰωάννην τὸν βαπτιστήν ἄλλοι δὲ ἠλίαν ἄλλοι δὲ ὅτι προφήτης τις τῶν ἀρχαίων ἀνέστη 9:19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
Luke 9:20 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνα με λέγετε εἶναι ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ πέτρος εἶπεν τὸν χριστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ Luke 9:20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
9:21 ὁ δὲ ἐπιτιμήσας αὐτοῖς παρήγγειλεν μηδενὶ εἰπεῖν τοῦτο 9:21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
9:22 εἰπὼν ὅτι δεῖ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου πολλὰ παθεῖν καὶ ἀποδοκιμασθῆναι ἀπὸ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ ἀρχιερέων καὶ γραμματέων καὶ ἀποκτανθῆναι καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθῆναι 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
9:23 ἕλεγεν δὲ πρὸς πάντας εἴ τις θέλει ὀπίσω μου ἐλθεῖν, ἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἀράτω τὸν σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ καθ᾽ ἡμέραν καὶ ἀκολουθείτω μοι 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
9:24 ὃς γὰρ ἂν θέλῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ σῶσαι ἀπολέσει αὐτήν ὃς δ᾽ ἂν ἀπολέσῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ οὗτος σώσει αὐτήν 9:24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
9:25 τί γὰρ ὠφελεῖται ἄνθρωπος κερδήσας τὸν κόσμον ὅλον ἑαυτὸν δὲ ἀπολέσας ἢ ζημιωθείς 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
9:26 ὃς γὰρ ἂν ἐπαισχυνθῇ με καὶ τοὺς ἐμοὺς λόγους τοῦτον ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐπαισχυνθήσεται ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ τῶν ἁγίων ἀγγέλων 9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels.
9:27 λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ἀληθῶς εἰσίν τινες τῶν ὧδε ἑστηκότων οἳ οὐ μὴ γεύσονται θανάτου ἕως ἂν ἴδωσιν τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ 9:27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
9:28 ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τοὺς λόγους τούτους ὡσεὶ ἡμέραι ὀκτὼ καὶ παραλαβὼν τὸν πέτρον καὶ ἰωάννην καὶ ἰάκωβον ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος προσεύξασθαι 9:28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
9:29 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ προσεύχεσθαι αὐτὸν τὸ εἶδος τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ ἕτερον καὶ ὁ ἱματισμὸς αὐτοῦ λευκὸς ἐξαστράπτων 9:29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
Luke 9:30 καὶ ἰδού, ἄνδρες δύο συνελάλουν αὐτῷ οἵτινες ἦσαν μωσῆς καὶ ἠλίας Luke 9:30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
9:31 οἳ ὀφθέντες ἐν δόξῃ ἔλεγον τὴν ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ ἣν ἔμελλεν πληροῦν ἐν ἰερουσαλήμ 9:31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
9:32 ὁ δὲ πέτρος καὶ οἱ σὺν αὐτῷ ἦσαν βεβαρημένοι ὕπνῳ διαγρηγορήσαντες δὲ εἶδον τὴν δόξαν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοὺς δύο ἄνδρας τοὺς συνεστῶτας αὐτῷ 9:32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
9:33 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ διαχωρίζεσθαι αὐτοὺς ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ εἶπεν ὁ πέτρος πρὸς τὸν ἰησοῦν ἐπιστάτα καλόν ἐστιν ἡμᾶς ὧδε εἶναι καὶ ποιήσωμεν σκηνὰς τρεῖς μίαν σοὶ καὶ μωσεῖ μίαν καὶ μίαν ἠλίᾳ μὴ εἰδὼς ὃ λέγει 9:33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
9:34 ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ λέγοντος ἐγένετο νεφέλη καὶ ἐπεσκίασεν αὐτούς ἐφοβήθησαν δὲ ἐν τῷ ἐκείνους εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν νεφέλην 9:34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
9:35 καὶ φωνὴ ἐγένετο ἐκ τῆς νεφέλης λέγουσα οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητὸς, αὐτοῦ ἀκούετε 9:35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
9:36 καὶ ἐν τῷ γενέσθαι τὴν φωνὴν εὑρέθη ὁ ἰησοῦς μόνος καὶ αὐτοὶ ἐσίγησαν καὶ οὐδενὶ ἀπήγγειλαν ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις οὐδὲν ὧν ἑώρακασιν 9:36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
9:37 ἐγένετο δὲ ἕν τῇ ἑξῆς ἡμέρᾳ κατελθόντων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄρους συνήντησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς 9:37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
9:38 καὶ ἰδού, ἀνὴρ ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου ἀνεβόησεν λέγων, διδάσκαλε δέομαί σου ἐπιβλέψον ἐπὶ τὸν υἱόν μου ὅτι μονογενής ἐστιν μοί 9:38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
9:39 καὶ ἰδού, πνεῦμα λαμβάνει αὐτόν καὶ ἐξαίφνης κράζει καὶ σπαράσσει αὐτὸν μετὰ ἀφροῦ καὶ μόγις ἀποχωρεῖ ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ συντρῖβον αὐτόν 9:39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
Luke 9:40 καὶ ἐδεήθην τῶν μαθητῶν σου ἵνα ἐκβάλλωσιν αὐτό καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθησαν Luke 9:40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
9:41 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν ὦ γενεὰ ἄπιστος καὶ διεστραμμένη ἕως πότε ἔσομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς καὶ ἀνέξομαι ὑμῶν προσάγαγε ὧδε τὸν υἱόν σου 9:41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
9:42 ἔτι δὲ προσερχομένου αὐτοῦ ἔῤῥηξεν αὐτὸν τὸ δαιμόνιον καὶ συνεσπάραξεν ἐπετίμησεν δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς τῷ πνεύματι τῷ ἀκαθάρτῳ καὶ ἰάσατο τὸν παῖδα καὶ ἀπέδωκεν αὐτὸν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ 9:42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
9:43 ἐξεπλήσσοντο δὲ πάντες ἐπὶ τῇ μεγαλειότητι τοῦ θεοῦ πάντων δὲ θαυμαζόντων ἐπὶ πᾶσιν οἷς ἐποίησεν ὁ ἰησοῦς, εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ 9:43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
9:44 φέσθε ὑμεῖς εἰς τὰ ὦτα ὑμῶν τοὺς λόγους τούτους ὁ γὰρ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου μέλλει παραδίδοσθαι εἰς χεῖρας ἀνθρώπων 9:44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
9:45 οἱ δὲ ἠγνόουν τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο καὶ ἦν παρακεκαλυμμένον ἀπ᾽ αὐτῶν ἵνα μὴ αἴσθωνται αὐτό καὶ ἐφοβοῦντο ἐρωτῆσαι αὐτὸν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος τούτου 9:45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
9:46 εἰσῆλθεν δὲ διαλογισμὸς ἐν αὐτοῖς τὸ τίς ἂν εἴη μείζων αὐτῶν 9:46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
9:47 ὁ δὲ ἰησοῦς ἰδὼν τὸν διαλογισμὸν τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν ἐπιλαβόμενος παιδίου, ἔστησεν αὐτὸ παρ᾽ ἑαυτῷ 9:47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
9:48 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὃς ἐὰν δέξηται τοῦτο τὸ παιδίον ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου ἐμὲ δέχεται καὶ ὃς ἐὰν ἐμὲ δέξηται δέχεται τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με ὁ γὰρ μικρότερος ἐν πᾶσιν ὑμῖν ὑπάρχων οὗτός ἐσται μέγας 9:48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
9:49 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἰωάννης εἶπεν ἐπιστάτα εἴδομέν τινα ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί σου ἐκβάλλοντα τά δαιμόνια καὶ ἐκωλύσαμεν αὐτὸν ὅτι οὐκ ἀκολουθεῖ μεθ᾽ ἡμῶν 9:49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
Luke 9:50 καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ ἰησοῦς μὴ κωλύετε ὃς γὰρ οὐκ ἔστιν καθ᾽ ἡμῶν ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν ἐστιν Luke 9:50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
9:51 ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ συμπληροῦσθαι τὰς ἡμέρας τῆς ἀναλήψεως αὐτοῦ καὶ αὐτὸς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, ἐστήριξεν τοῦ πορεύεσθαι εἰς ἰερουσαλήμ 9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
9:52 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἀγγέλους πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ καὶ πορευθέντες εἰσῆλθον εἰς κώμην σαμαρειτῶν, ὡστε ἑτοιμάσαι αὐτῷ 9:52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
9:53 καὶ οὐκ ἐδέξαντο αὐτόν ὅτι τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ ἦν πορευόμενον εἰς ἰερουσαλήμ 9:53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
9:54 ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἰάκωβος καὶ ἰωάννης εἶπον, κύριε θέλεις εἴπωμεν πῦρ καταβῆναι ἀπὸ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἀναλῶσαι αὐτούς ὡς καὶ ἠλίας ἐποίησεν 9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
9:55 στραφεὶς δὲ ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς καὶ εἶπεν, οὐκ οἰδατε οἵου πνεύματός ἐστε ὑμεῖς 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
9:56 ὁ γὰρ ὑιὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν ψυχὰς ἀνθρώπων ἀπολέσαι, αλλα σῶσαι καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν εἰς ἑτέραν κώμην 9:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
9:57 ἐγένετο δὲ πορευομένων αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶπέν τις πρὸς αὐτόν ἀκολουθήσω σοι ὅπου ἂν ἀπέρχῃ κύριε 9:57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
9:58 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἰησοῦς αἱ ἀλώπεκες φωλεοὺς ἔχουσιν καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατασκηνώσεις ὁ δὲ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἔχει ποῦ τὴν κεφαλὴν κλίνῃ 9:58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
9:59 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς ἕτερον ἀκολούθει μοι ὁ δὲ εἶπεν κύριε ἐπίτρεψόν μοι ἀπελθόντι πρῶτον θάψαι τὸν πατέρα μου 9:59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
Luke 9:60 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ ἰησοῦς, ἄφες τοὺς νεκροὺς θάψαι τοὺς ἑαυτῶν νεκρούς σὺ δὲ ἀπελθὼν διάγγελλε τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ Luke 9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
9:61 εἶπεν δὲ καὶ ἕτερος ἀκολουθήσω σοι κύριε πρῶτον δὲ ἐπίτρεψόν μοι ἀποτάξασθαι τοῖς εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μου 9:61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
9:62 εἶπεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ ἰησοῦς οὐδεὶς ἐπιβαλὼν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἐπ᾽ ἄροτρον καὶ βλέπων εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω εὔθετός ἐστιν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ 9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
