Matthew 14:1 en ekeinw tw kairw hkousen hrwdhj o tetrarxhj thn akohn ihsou Matthew 14:1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,
14:2 kai eipen toij paisin autou outoj estin iwannhj o baptisthj autoj hgerqh apo twn nekrwn kai dia touto ai dunameij energousin en autw 14:2 And said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do shew forth themselves in him.
14:3 o gar hrwdhj krathsaj ton iwannhn edhsen auton kai eqeto en fulakh dia hrwdiada thn gunaika filippou tou adelfou autou 14:3 For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife.
14:4 elegen gar autw o iwannhj ouk ecestin soi exein authn 14:4 For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
14:5 kai qelwn auton apokteinai efobhqh ton oxlon oti wj profhthn auton eixon 14:5 And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
14:6 genesiwn de agomenwn tou hrwdou wrxhsato h qugathr thj hrwdiadoj en tw mesw kai hresen tw hrwdh 14:6 But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.
14:7 oqen meq orkou wmologhsen auth dounai o ean aithshtai 14:7 Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she would ask.
14:8 h de probibasqeisa upo thj mhtroj authj doj moi fhsin wde epi pinaki thn kefalhn iwannou tou baptistou 14:8 And she, being before instructed of her mother, said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger.
14:9 kai eluphqh o basileuj dia de touj orkouj kai touj sunanakeimenouj ekeleusen doqhnai 14:9 And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her.
Matthew 14:10 kai pemyaj apekefalisen ton iwannhn en th fulakh Matthew 14:10 And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
14:11 kai hnexqh h kefalh autou epi pinaki kai edoqh tw korasiw kai hnegken th mhtri authj 14:11 And his head was brought in a charger, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.
14:12 kai proselqontej oi maqhtai autou hran to swma kai eqayan auto kai elqontej aphggeilan tw ihsou 14:12 And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.
14:13 kai akousaj o ihsouj anexwrhsen ekeiqen en ploiw eij erhmon topon kat idian kai akousantej oi oxloi hkolouqhsan autw pezh apo twn polewn 14:13 When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence by ship into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard thereof, they followed him on foot out of the cities.
14:14 kai ecelqwn o ihsouj eiden polun oxlon kai esplagxnisqh ep autouj kai eqerapeusen touj arrwstouj autwn 14:14 And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
14:15 oyiaj de genomenhj proshlqon autw oi maqhtai autou legontej erhmoj estin o topoj kai h wra hdh parhlqen apoluson touj oxlouj ina apelqontej eij taj kwmaj agoraswsin eautoij brwmata 14:15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
14:16 o de ihsouj eipen autoij ou xreian exousin apelqein dote autoij umeij fagein 14:16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
14:17 oi de legousin autw ouk exomen wde ei mh pente artouj kai duo ixquaj 14:17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
14:18 o de eipen ferete moi autouj wde 14:18 He said, Bring them hither to me.
14:19 kai keleusaj touj oxlouj anakliqhnai epi touj xortouj kai labwn touj pente artouj kai touj duo ixquaj anableyaj eij ton ouranon euloghsen kai klasaj edwken toij maqhtaij touj artouj oi de maqhtai toij oxloij 14:19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
Matthew 14:20 kai efagon pantej kai exortasqhsan kai hran to perisseuon twn klasmatwn dwdeka kofinouj plhreij Matthew 14:20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
14:21 oi de esqiontej hsan andrej wsei pentakisxilioi xwrij gunaikwn kai paidiwn 14:21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
14:22 kai euqewj hnagkasen o ihsouj touj maqhtaj autou embhnai eij to ploion kai proagein auton eij to peran ewj ou apolush touj oxlouj 14:22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.
14:23 kai apolusaj touj oxlouj anebh eij to oroj kat idian proseucasqai oyiaj de genomenhj monoj hn ekei 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.
14:24 to de ploion hdh meson thj qalasshj hn basanizomenon upo twn kumatwn hn gar enantioj o anemoj 14:24 But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.
14:25 tetarth de fulakh thj nuktoj aphlqen proj autouj o ihsouj peripatwn epi thj qalasshj 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.
14:26 kai idontej auton oi maqhtai epi thn qalassan peripatounta etaraxqhsan legontej oti fantasma estin kai apo tou fobou ekracan 14:26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
14:27 euqewj de elalhsen autoij o ihsouj legwn qarseite egw eimi mh fobeisqe 14:27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
14:28 apokriqeij de autw o petroj eipen kurie ei su ei keleuson me proj se elqein epi ta udata 14:28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
14:29 o de eipen elqe kai katabaj apo tou ploiou o petroj periepathsen epi ta udata elqein proj ton ihsoun 14:29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
Matthew 14:30 blepwn de ton anemon isxuron efobhqh kai arcamenoj katapontizesqai ekracen legwn kurie swson me Matthew 14:30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
14:31 euqewj de o ihsouj ekteinaj thn xeira epelabeto autou kai legei autw oligopiste eij ti edistasaj 14:31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
14:32 kai embantwn autwn eij to ploion ekopasen o anemoj 14:32 And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.
14:33 oi de en tw ploiw elqontej prosekunhsan autw legontej alhqwj qeou uioj ei 14:33 Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
14:34 kai diaperasantej hlqon eij thn ghn gennhsaret 14:34 And when they were gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
14:35 kai epignontej auton oi andrej tou topou ekeinou apesteilan eij olhn thn perixwron ekeinhn kai proshnegkan autw pantaj touj kakwj exontaj 14:35 And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased;
14:36 kai parekaloun auton ina monon aywntai tou kraspedou tou imatiou autou kai osoi hyanto dieswqhsan 14:36 And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole.
