3:2 sub principibus sacerdotum Anna et Caipha: factum est verbum Domini super Joannem, Zachariæ filium, in deserto. 3:2 ep arxierewn anna kai kaiafa egeneto rhma qeou epi iwannhn ton tou zaxariou uion en th erhmw 3:2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
3:3 Et venit in omnem regionem Jordanis, prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum, 3:3 kai hlqen eij pasan thn perixwron tou iordanou khrusswn baptisma metanoiaj eij afesin amartiwn 3:3 And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
3:4 sicut scriptum est in libro sermonum Isaiæ prophetæ: [Vox clamantis in deserto: Parate viam Domini; rectas facite semitas ejus: 3:4 wj gegraptai en biblw logwn hsaiou tou profhtou legontoj fwnh bowntoj en th erhmw etoimasate thn odon kuriou euqeiaj poieite taj tribouj autou 3:4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
3:5 omnis vallis implebitur, et omnis mons, et collis humiliabitur: et erunt prava in directa, et aspera in vias planas: 3:5 pasa faragc plhrwqhsetai kai pan oroj kai bounoj tapeinwqhsetai kai estai ta skolia eij euqeian kai ai traxeiai eij odouj leiaj 3:5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
3:6 et videbit omnis caro salutare Dei.] 3:6 kai oyetai pasa sarc to swthrion tou qeou 3:6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
3:7 Dicebat ergo ad turbas quæ exibant ut baptizarentur ab ipso: Genimina viperarum, quis ostendit vobis fugere a ventura ira? 3:7 elegen oun toij ekporeuomenoij oxloij baptisqhnai up autou gennhmata exidnwn tij upedeicen umin fugein apo thj melloushj orghj 3:7 Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
3:8 Facite ergo fructus dignos pœnitentiæ, et ne cœperitis dicere: Patrem habemus Abraham. Dico enim vobis quia potens est Deus de lapidibus istis suscitare filios Abrahæ. 3:8 poihsate oun karpouj aciouj thj metanoiaj kai mh archsqe legein en eautoij patera exomen ton abraam legw gar umin oti dunatai o qeoj ek twn liqwn toutwn egeirai tekna tw abraam 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
3:9 Jam enim securis ad radicem arborum posita est. Omnis ergo arbor non faciens fructum bonum, excidetur, et in ignem mittetur. 3:9 hdh de kai h acinh proj thn rizan twn dendrwn keitai pan oun dendron mh poioun karpon kalon ekkoptetai kai eij pur balletai 3:9 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Luke 3:10 Et interrogabant eum turbæ, dicentes: Quid ergo faciemus? Luke 3:10 kai ephrwtwn auton oi oxloi legontej ti oun poihsomen Luke 3:10 And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
3:11 Respondens autem dicebat illis: Qui habet duas tunicas, det non habenti: et qui habet escas, similiter faciat. 3:11 apokriqeij de legei autoij o exwn duo xitwnaj metadotw tw mh exonti kai o exwn brwmata omoiwj poieitw 3:11 He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise.
3:12 Venerunt autem et publicani ut baptizarentur, et dixerunt ad illum: Magister, quid faciemus? 3:12 hlqon de kai telwnai baptisqhnai kai eipon proj auton didaskale ti poihsomen 3:12 Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?
3:13 At ille dixit ad eos: Nihil amplius, quam quod constitutum est vobis, faciatis. 3:13 o de eipen proj autouj mhden pleon para to diatetagmenon umin prassete 3:13 And he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
3:14 Interrogabant autem eum et milites, dicentes: Quid faciemus et nos? Et ait illis: Neminem concutiatis, neque calumniam faciatis: et contenti estote stipendiis vestris. 3:14 ephrwtwn de auton kai strateuomenoi legontej kai hmeij ti poihsomen kai eipen proj autouj mhdena diaseishte mhde sukofanthshte kai arkeisqe toij oywnioij umwn 3:14 And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages.
3:15 Existimante autem populo, et cogitantibus omnibus in cordibus suis de Joanne, ne forte ipse esset Christus, 3:15 prosdokwntoj de tou laou kai dialogizomenwn pantwn en taij kardiaij autwn peri tou iwannou mhpote autoj eih o xristoj 3:15 And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not;
3:16 respondit Joannes, dicens omnibus: Ego quidem aqua baptizo vos: veniet autem fortior me, cujus non sum dignus solvere corrigiam calceamentorum ejus: ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu Sancto et igni: 3:16 apekrinato o iwannhj apasin legwn egw men udati baptizw umaj erxetai de o isxuroteroj mou ou ouk eimi ikanoj lusai ton imanta twn upodhmatwn autou autoj umaj baptisei en pneumati agiw kai puri 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
3:17 cujus ventilabrum in manu ejus, et purgabit aream suam, et congregabit triticum in horreum suum, paleas autem comburet igni inextinguibili. 3:17 ou to ptuon en th xeiri autou kai diakaqariei thn alwna autou kai sunacei ton siton eij thn apoqhkhn autou to de axuron katakausei puri asbestw 3:17 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
3:18 Multa quidem et alia exhortans evangelizabat populo. 3:18 polla men oun kai etera parakalwn euhggelizeto ton laon 3:18 And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people.
3:19 Herodes autem tetrarcha cum corriperetur ab illo de Herodiade uxore fratris sui, et de omnibus malis quæ fecit Herodes, 3:19 o de hrwdhj o tetrarxhj elegxomenoj up autou peri hrwdiadoj thj gunaikoj filippou tou adelfou autou kai peri pantwn wn epoihsen ponhrwn o hrwdhj 3:19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
Luke 3:20 adjecit et hoc super omnia, et inclusit Joannem in carcere. Luke 3:20 proseqhken kai touto epi pasin kai katekleisen ton iwannhn en th fulakh Luke 3:20 Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
3:21 Factum est autem cum baptizaretur omnis populus, et Jesu baptizato, et orante, apertum est cælum: 3:21 egeneto de en tw baptisqhnai apanta ton laon kai ihsou baptisqentoj kai proseuxomenou anewxqhnai ton ouranon 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
