Luke 23:1 Et surgens omnis multitudo eorum, duxerunt illum ad Pilatum. Luke 23:1 kai anastan apan to plhqoj autwn hgagen auton epi ton pilaton Luke 23:1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.
23:2 Cœperunt autem illum accusare, dicentes: Hunc invenimus subvertentem gentem nostram, et prohibentem tributa dare Cæsari, et dicentem se Christum regem esse. 23:2 hrcanto de kathgorein autou legontej touton euromen diastrefonta to eqnoj kai kwluonta kaisari forouj didonai legonta eauton xriston basilea einai 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.
23:3 Pilatus autem interrogavit eum, dicens: Tu es rex Judæorum? At ille respondens ait: Tu dicis. 23:3 o de pilatoj ephrwthsen auton legwn su ei o basileuj twn ioudaiwn o de apokriqeij autw efh su legeij 23:3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
23:4 Ait autem Pilatus ad principes sacerdotum et turbas: Nihil invenio causæ in hoc homine. 23:4 o de pilatoj eipen proj touj arxiereij kai touj oxlouj ouden euriskw aition en tw anqrwpw toutw 23:4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
23:5 At illi invalescebant, dicentes: Commovet populum docens per universam Judæam, incipiens a Galilæa usque huc. 23:5 oi de episxuon legontej oti anaseiei ton laon didaskwn kaq olhj thj ioudaiaj arcamenoj apo thj galilaiaj ewj wde 23:5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
23:6 Pilatus autem audiens Galilæam, interrogavit si homo Galilæus esset. 23:6 pilatoj de akousaj galilaian ephrwthsen ei o anqrwpoj galilaioj estin 23:6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
23:7 Et ut cognovit quod de Herodis potestate esset, remisit eum ad Herodem, qui et ipse Jerosolymis erat illis diebus. 23:7 kai epignouj oti ek thj ecousiaj hrwdou estin anepemyen auton proj hrwdhn onta kai auton en ierosolumoij en tautaij taij hmeraij 23:7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
23:8 Herodes autem viso Jesu, gavisus est valde. Erat enim cupiens ex multo tempore videre eum, eo quod audierat multa de eo, et sperabat signum aliquod videre ab eo fieri. 23:8 o de hrwdhj idwn ton ihsoun exarh lian hn gar qelwn ec ikanou idein auton dia to akouein polla peri autou kai hlpizen ti shmeion idein up autou ginomenon 23:8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
23:9 Interrogabat autem eum multis sermonibus. At ipse nihil illi respondebat. 23:9 ephrwta de auton en logoij ikanoij autoj de ouden apekrinato autw 23:9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
Luke 23:10 Stabant autem principes sacerdotum et scribæ constanter accusantes eum. Luke 23:10 eisthkeisan de oi arxiereij kai oi grammateij eutonwj kathgorountej autou Luke 23:10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
23:11 Sprevit autem illum Herodes cum exercitu suo: et illusit indutum veste alba, et remisit ad Pilatum. 23:11 ecouqenhsaj de auton o hrwdhj sun toij strateumasin autou kai empaicaj peribalwn auton esqhta lampran anepemyen auton tw pilatw 23:11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
23:12 Et facti sunt amici Herodes et Pilatus in ipsa die: nam antea inimici erant ad invicem. 23:12 egenonto de filoi o te pilatoj kai o hrwdhj en auth th hmera met allhlwn prouphrxon gar en exqra ontej proj eautouj 23:12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
23:13 Pilatus autem, convocatis principibus sacerdotum, et magistratibus, et plebe, 23:13 pilatoj de sugkalesamenoj touj arxiereij kai touj arxontaj kai ton laon 23:13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
23:14 dixit ad illos: Obtulistis mihi hunc hominem, quasi avertentem populum, et ecce ego coram vobis interrogans, nullam causam inveni in homine isto ex his in quibus eum accusatis. 23:14 eipen proj autouj proshnegkate moi ton anqrwpon touton wj apostrefonta ton laon kai idou egw enwpion umwn anakrinaj ouden euron en tw anqrwpw toutw aition wn kathgoreite kat autou 23:14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:
23:15 Sed neque Herodes: nam remisi vos ad illum, et ecce nihil dignum morte actum est ei. 23:15 all oude hrwdhj anepemya gar umaj proj auton kai idou ouden acion qanatou estin pepragmenon autw 23:15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
23:16 Emendatum ergo illum dimittam. 23:16 paideusaj oun auton apolusw 23:16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
23:17 Necesse autem habebat dimittere eis per diem festum unum. 23:17 anagkhn de eixen apoluein autoij kata eorthn ena 23:17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)
23:18 Exclamavit autem simul universa turba, dicens: Tolle hunc, et dimitte nobis Barabbam: 23:18 anekracan de pamplhqei legontej aire touton apoluson de hmin ton barabban 23:18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
23:19 qui erat propter seditionem quamdam factam in civitate et homicidium missus in carcerem. 23:19 ostij hn dia stasin tina genomenhn en th polei kai fonon beblhmenoj eij fulakhn 23:19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)
Luke 23:20 Iterum autem Pilatus locutus est ad eos, volens dimittere Jesum. Luke 23:20 palin oun o pilatoj prosefwnhsen qelwn apolusai ton ihsoun Luke 23:20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.
23:21 At illi succlamabant, dicentes: Crucifige, crucifige eum. 23:21 oi de epefwnoun legontej staurwson staurwson auton 23:21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
23:22 Ille autem tertio dixit ad illos: Quid enim mali fecit iste? nullam causam mortis invenio in eo: corripiam ergo illum et dimittam. 23:22 o de triton eipen proj autouj ti gar kakon epoihsen outoj ouden aition qanatou euron en autw paideusaj oun auton apolusw 23:22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.
23:23 At illi instabant vocibus magnis postulantes ut crucifigeretur: et invalescebant voces eorum. 23:23 oi de epekeinto fwnaij megalaij aitoumenoi auton staurwqhnai kai katisxuon ai fwnai autwn kai twn arxierewn 23:23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
23:24 Et Pilatus adjudicavit fieri petitionem eorum. 23:24 o de pilatoj epekrinen genesqai to aithma autwn 23:24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
23:25 Dimisit autem illis eum qui propter homicidium et seditionem missus fuerat in carcerem, quem petebant: Jesum vero tradidit voluntati eorum. 23:25 apelusen de autoij ton dia stasin kai fonon beblhmenon eij thn fulakhn on htounto ton de ihsoun paredwken tw qelhmati autwn 23:25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
23:26 Et cum ducerent eum, apprehenderunt Simonem quemdam Cyrenensem venientem de villa: et imposuerunt illi crucem portare post Jesum. 23:26 kai wj aphgagon auton epilabomenoi simwnoj tinoj kurhnaiou tou erxomenou ap agrou epeqhkan autw ton stauron ferein opisqen tou ihsou 23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
23:27 Sequebatur autem illum multa turba populi et mulierum, quæ plangebant et lamentabantur eum. 23:27 hkolouqei de autw polu plhqoj tou laou kai gunaikwn ai kai ekoptonto kai eqrhnoun auton 23:27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.
23:28 Conversus autem ad illas Jesus, dixit: Filiæ Jerusalem, nolite flere super me, sed super vos ipsas flete et super filios vestros. 23:28 strafeij de proj autaj o ihsouj eipen qugaterej ierousalhm mh klaiete ep eme plhn ef eautaj klaiete kai epi ta tekna umwn 23:28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
23:29 Quoniam ecce venient dies in quibus dicent: Beatæ steriles, et ventres qui non genuerunt, et ubera quæ non lactaverunt. 23:29 oti idou erxontai hmerai en aij erousin makariai ai steirai kai koiliai ai ouk egennhsan kai mastoi oi ouk eqhlasan 23:29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.
Luke 23:30 Tunc incipient dicere montibus: Cadite super nos; et collibus: Operite nos. Luke 23:30 tote arcontai legein toij oresin pesete ef hmaj kai toij bounoij kaluyate hmaj Luke 23:30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
23:31 Quia si in viridi ligno hæc faciunt, in arido quid fiet? 23:31 oti ei en tw ugrw culw tauta poiousin en tw chrw ti genhtai 23:31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
23:32 Ducebantur autem et alii duo nequam cum eo, ut interficerentur. 23:32 hgonto de kai eteroi duo kakourgoi sun autw anaireqhnai 23:32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
23:33 Et postquam venerunt in locum qui vocatur Calvariæ, ibi crucifixerunt eum: et latrones, unum a dextris, et alterum a sinistris. 23:33 kai ote aphlqon epi ton topon ton kaloumenon kranion ekei estaurwsan auton kai touj kakourgouj on men ek deciwn on de ec aristerwn 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
23:34 Jesus autem dicebat: Pater, dimitte illis: non enim sciunt quid faciunt. Dividentes vero vestimenta ejus, miserunt sortes. 23:34 o de ihsouj elegen pater afej autoij ou gar oidasin ti poiousin diamerizomenoi de ta imatia autou ebalon klhron 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
23:35 Et stabat populus spectans, et deridebant eum principes cum eis, dicentes: Alios salvos fecit, se salvum faciat, si hic est Christus Dei electus. 23:35 kai eisthkei o laoj qewrwn ecemukthrizon de kai oi arxontej sun autoij legontej allouj eswsen swsatw eauton ei outoj estin o xristoj o tou qeou eklektoj 23:35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
23:36 Illudebant autem ei et milites accedentes, et acetum offerentes ei, 23:36 enepaizon de autw kai oi stratiwtai proserxomenoi kai ocoj prosferontej autw 23:36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
23:37 et dicentes: Si tu es rex Judæorum, salvum te fac. 23:37 kai legontej ei su ei o basileuj twn ioudaiwn swson seauton 23:37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
23:38 Erat autem et superscriptio scripta super eum litteris græcis, et latinis, et hebraicis: Hic est rex Judæorum. 23:38 hn de kai epigrafh gegrammenh ep autw grammasin ellhnikoij kai rwmaikoij kai ebraikoij outoj estin o basileuj twn ioudaiwn 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
23:39 Unus autem de his, qui pendebant, latronibus, blasphemabat eum, dicens: Si tu es Christus, salvum fac temetipsum et nos. 23:39 eij de twn kremasqentwn kakourgwn eblasfhmei auton legwn ei su ei o xristoj swson seauton kai hmaj 23:39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
Luke 23:40 Respondens autem alter increpabat eum, dicens: Neque tu times Deum, quod in eadem damnatione es. Luke 23:40 apokriqeij de o eteroj epetima autw legwn oude fobh su ton qeon oti en tw autw krimati ei Luke 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
23:41 Et nos quidem juste, nam digna factis recipimus: hic vero nihil mali gessit. 23:41 kai hmeij men dikaiwj acia gar wn epracamen apolambanomen outoj de ouden atopon epracen 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
23:42 Et dicebat ad Jesum: Domine, memento mei cum veneris in regnum tuum. 23:42 kai elegen tw ihsou mnhsqhti mou kurie otan elqhj en th basileia sou 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
23:43 Et dixit illi Jesus: Amen dico tibi: hodie mecum eris in paradiso. 23:43 kai eipen autw o ihsouj amhn legw soi shmeron met emou esh en tw paradeisw 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
23:44 Erat autem fere hora sexta, et tenebræ factæ sunt in universam terram usque ad horam nonam. 23:44 hn de wsei wra ekth kai skotoj egeneto ef olhn thn ghn ewj wraj ennathj 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
23:45 Et obscuratus est sol, et velum templi scissum est medium. 23:45 kai eskotisqh o hlioj kai esxisqh to katapetasma tou naou meson 23:45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
23:46 Et clamans voce magna Jesus ait: Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et hæc dicens, expiravit. 23:46 kai fwnhsaj fwnh megalh o ihsouj eipen pater eij xeiraj sou paraqhsomai to pneuma mou kai tauta eipwn ecepneusen 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
23:47 Videns autem centurio quod factum fuerat, glorificavit Deum, dicens: Vere hic homo justus erat. 23:47 idwn de o ekatontarxoj to genomenon edocasen ton qeon legwn ontwj o anqrwpoj outoj dikaioj hn 23:47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
23:48 Et omnis turba eorum, qui simul aderant ad spectaculum istud, et videbant quæ fiebant, percutientes pectora sua revertebantur. 23:48 kai pantej oi sumparagenomenoi oxloi epi thn qewrian tauthn qewrountej ta genomena tuptontej eautwn ta sthqh upestrefon 23:48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.
23:49 Stabant autem omnes noti ejus a longe, et mulieres, quæ secutæ eum erant a Galilæa, hæc videntes. 23:49 eisthkeisan de pantej oi gnwstoi autou makroqen kai gunaikej ai sunakolouqhsasai autw apo thj galilaiaj orwsai tauta 23:49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
Luke 23:50 Et ecce vir nomine Joseph, qui erat decurio, vir bonus et justus: Luke 23:50 kai idou anhr onomati iwshf bouleuthj uparxwn anhr agaqoj kai dikaioj Luke 23:50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:
23:51 hic non consenserat consilio, et actibus eorum: ab Arimathæa civitate Judææ, qui exspectabat et ipse regnum Dei: 23:51 outoj ouk hn sugkatateqeimenoj th boulh kai th pracei autwn apo arimaqaiaj polewj twn ioudaiwn oj kai prosedexeto kai autoj thn basileian tou qeou 23:51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
23:52 hic accessit ad Pilatum et petiit corpus Jesu: 23:52 outoj proselqwn tw pilatw hthsato to swma tou ihsou 23:52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
23:53 et depositum involvit sindone, et posuit eum in monumento exciso, in quo nondum quisquam positus fuerat. 23:53 kai kaqelwn auto enetulicen auto sindoni kai eqhken auto en mnhmati laceutw ou ouk hn oudepw oudeij keimenoj 23:53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
23:54 Et dies erat parasceves, et sabbatum illucescebat. 23:54 kai hmera hn paraskeuh kai sabbaton epefwsken 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
23:55 Subsecutæ autem mulieres, quæ cum eo venerant de Galilæa, viderunt monumentum, et quemadmodum positum erat corpus ejus. 23:55 katakolouqhsasai de kai gunaikej aitinej hsan sunelhluquiai autw ek thj galilaiaj eqeasanto to mnhmeion kai wj eteqh to swma autou 23:55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
23:56 Et revertentes paraverunt aromata, et unguenta: et sabbato quidem siluerunt secundum mandatum. 23:56 upostreyasai de htoimasan arwmata kai mura kai to men sabbaton hsuxasan kata thn entolhn 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
