LUKE CHAPTER 23

Latin VulgateGreek Textus ReceptusEnglish King James
Luke 23:1 Et surgens omnis multitudo eorum, duxerunt illum ad Pilatum. Luke 23:1 καὶ ἀναστὰν ἅπαν τὸ πλῆθος αὐτῶν ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸν πιλᾶτον Luke 23:1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.
23:2 ἤρξαντο δὲ κατηγορεῖν αὐτοῦ λέγοντες τοῦτον εὕρομεν διαστρέφοντα τὸ ἔθνος καὶ κωλύοντα καίσαρι φόρους διδόναι λέγοντα ἑαυτὸν χριστὸν βασιλέα εἶναι 23:2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.
23:3 Pilatus autem interrogavit eum, dicens: Tu es rex Judæorum? At ille respondens ait: Tu dicis. 23:3 ὁ δὲ πιλᾶτος ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτὸν λέγων, σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν ἰουδαίων ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ ἔφη σὺ λέγεις 23:3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.
23:4 ὁ δὲ πιλᾶτος εἶπεν πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ὄχλους οὐδὲν εὑρίσκω αἴτιον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ 23:4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.
23:5 At illi invalescebant, dicentes: Commovet populum docens per universam Judæam, incipiens a Galilæa usque huc. 23:5 οἱ δὲ ἐπίσχυον λέγοντες ὅτι ἀνασείει τὸν λαὸν διδάσκων καθ᾽ ὅλης τῆς ἰουδαίας ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῆς γαλιλαίας ἕως ὧδε 23:5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.
23:6 πιλᾶτος δὲ ἀκούσας γαλιλαίαν ἐπηρώτησεν εἰ ὁ ἄνθρωπος γαλιλαῖός ἐστιν 23:6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
23:7 καὶ ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ἐκ τῆς ἐξουσίας ἡρῴδου ἐστὶν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν πρὸς ἡρῴδην ὄντα καὶ αὐτὸν ἐν ἱεροσολύμοις ἐν ταύταις ταῖς ἡμέραις 23:7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.
23:8 ὁ δὲ ἡρῴδης ἰδὼν τὸν ἰησοῦν ἐχάρη λίαν ἦν γὰρ θέλων ἐξ ἱκανοῦ ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν διὰ τὸ ἀκούειν πολλὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἤλπιζέν τι σημεῖον ἰδεῖν ὑπ᾽ αὐτοῦ γινόμενον 23:8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.
23:9 Interrogabat autem eum multis sermonibus. At ipse nihil illi respondebat. 23:9 ἐπηρώτα δὲ αὐτὸν ἐν λόγοις ἱκανοῖς αὐτὸς δὲ οὐδὲν ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῷ 23:9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.
Luke 23:10 εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς εὐτόνως κατηγοροῦντες αὐτοῦ Luke 23:10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.
23:11 ἐξουθενήσας δὲ αὐτὸν ὁ ἡρῴδης σὺν τοῖς στρατεύμασιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμπαίξας περιβαλὼν αὐτὸν ἐσθῆτα λαμπρὰν ἀνέπεμψεν αὐτὸν τῷ πιλάτῳ 23:11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.
23:12 ἐγένοντο δὲ φίλοι ὅ τε πιλᾶτος καὶ ὁ ἡρῴδης ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ μετ᾽ ἀλλήλων προϋπῆρχον γὰρ ἐν ἔχθρᾳ ὄντες πρὸς ἑαυτούς 23:12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
23:13 Pilatus autem, convocatis principibus sacerdotum, et magistratibus, et plebe, 23:13 πιλᾶτος δὲ συγκαλεσάμενος τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τὸν λαὸν 23:13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
23:14 dixit ad illos: Obtulistis mihi hunc hominem, quasi avertentem populum, et ecce ego coram vobis interrogans, nullam causam inveni in homine isto ex his in quibus eum accusatis. 23:14 εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς προσηνέγκατέ μοι τὸν ἄνθρωπον τοῦτον ὡς ἀποστρέφοντα τὸν λαόν καὶ ἰδού, ἐγὼ ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ἀνακρίνας οὐδὲν εὗρον ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ αἴτιον ὧν κατηγορεῖτε κατ᾽ αὐτοῦ 23:14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:
23:15 Sed neque Herodes: nam remisi vos ad illum, et ecce nihil dignum morte actum est ei. 23:15 ἀλλ᾽ οὐδὲ ἡρῴδης ἀνέπεμψα γὰρ ὑμᾶς πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἰδού, οὐδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου ἐστὶν πεπραγμένον αὐτῷ 23:15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
23:16 Emendatum ergo illum dimittam. 23:16 παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω 23:16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.
23:17 ἀνάγκην δέ εἶχεν ἀπολύειν αὐτοῖς κατὰ ἑορτὴν ἕνα 23:17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)
23:18 Exclamavit autem simul universa turba, dicens: Tolle hunc, et dimitte nobis Barabbam: 23:18 ἀνέκραξαν δὲ παμπληθεὶ λέγοντες αἶρε τοῦτον ἀπόλυσον δὲ ἡμῖν τὸν βαραββᾶν 23:18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:
23:19 qui erat propter seditionem quamdam factam in civitate et homicidium missus in carcerem. 23:19 ὅστις ἦν διὰ στάσιν τινὰ γενομένην ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ φόνον βεβλημένος εἰς φυλακήν 23:19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)
Luke 23:20 πάλιν οὖν ὁ πιλᾶτος προσεφώνησεν θέλων ἀπολῦσαι τὸν ἰησοῦν Luke 23:20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.
23:21 At illi succlamabant, dicentes: Crucifige, crucifige eum. 23:21 οἱ δὲ ἐπεφώνουν λέγοντες σταύρωσον, σταύρωσον αὐτόν 23:21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.
23:22 ὁ δὲ τρίτον εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς τί γὰρ κακὸν ἐποίησεν οὗτος οὐδὲν αἴτιον θανάτου εὗρον ἐν αὐτῷ παιδεύσας οὖν αὐτὸν ἀπολύσω 23:22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.
23:23 At illi instabant vocibus magnis postulantes ut crucifigeretur: et invalescebant voces eorum. 23:23 οἱ δὲ ἐπέκειντο φωναῖς μεγάλαις αἰτούμενοι αὐτὸν σταυρωθῆναι καὶ κατίσχυον αἱ φωναὶ αὐτῶν καὶ τῶν ἀρχιερέων 23:23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
23:24 Et Pilatus adjudicavit fieri petitionem eorum. 23:24 ὁ δὲ πιλᾶτος ἐπέκρινεν γενέσθαι τὸ αἴτημα αὐτῶν 23:24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
23:25 ἀπέλυσεν δὲ αὐτοῖς τὸν διὰ στάσιν καὶ φόνον βεβλημένον εἰς τὴν φυλακὴν ὃν ᾐτοῦντο τὸν δὲ ἰησοῦν παρέδωκεν τῷ θελήματι αὐτῶν 23:25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.
23:26 καὶ ὡς ἀπήγαγον αὐτόν ἐπιλαβόμενοι σίμωνος τινος κυρηναίου τοῦ ἐρχόμενου ἀπ᾽ ἀγροῦ ἐπέθηκαν αὐτῷ τὸν σταυρὸν φέρειν ὄπισθεν τοῦ ἰησοῦ 23:26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
23:27 ἠκολούθει δὲ αὐτῷ πολὺ πλῆθος τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ γυναικῶν αἳ καὶ ἐκόπτοντο καὶ ἐθρήνουν αὐτόν 23:27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.
23:28 στραφεὶς δὲ πρὸς αὐτὰς ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν φυγατέρες ἰερουσαλήμ μὴ κλαίετε ἐπ᾽ ἐμέ πλὴν ἐφ᾽ ἑαυτὰς κλαίετε καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ τέκνα ὑμῶν 23:28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
23:29 ὅτι ἰδού, ἔρχονται ἡμέραι ἐν αἷς ἐροῦσιν μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι καὶ κοιλίαι αἱ οὐκ ἐγέννησαν καὶ μαστοὶ οἳ οὐκ ἔθήλασαν 23:29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.
Luke 23:30 Tunc incipient dicere montibus: Cadite super nos; et collibus: Operite nos. Luke 23:30 τότε ἄρξονται λέγειν τοῖς ὄρεσιν πέσετε ἐφ᾽ ἡμᾶς καὶ τοῖς βουνοῖς καλύψατε ἡμᾶς Luke 23:30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
23:31 Quia si in viridi ligno hæc faciunt, in arido quid fiet? 23:31 ὅτι εἰ ἐν τῷ ὑγρῷ ξύλῳ ταῦτα ποιοῦσιν ἐν τῷ ξηρῷ τί γένηται 23:31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?
23:32 ἤγοντο δὲ καὶ ἕτεροι δύο κακοῦργοι σὺν αὐτῷ ἀναιρεθῆναι 23:32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
23:33 καὶ ὅτε ἀπῆλθον ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τὸν καλούμενον κρανίον ἐκεῖ ἐσταύρωσαν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς κακούργους ὃν μὲν ἐκ δεξιῶν ὃν δὲ ἐξ ἀριστερῶν 23:33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Dividentes vero vestimenta ejus, miserunt sortes. 23:34 ὁ δὲ ἰησοῦς ἔλεγεν πάτερ ἄφες αὐτοῖς οὐ γὰρ οἴδασιν τί ποιοῦσιν διαμεριζόμενοι δὲ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ἔβαλον κλῆρον 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
23:36 Illudebant autem ei et milites accedentes, et acetum offerentes ei, 23:36 ἐνέπαιζον δὲ αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται προσερχόμενοι καὶ ὄξος προσφέροντες αὐτῷ 23:36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
23:37 et dicentes: Si tu es rex Judæorum, salvum te fac. 23:37 καὶ λέγοντες εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν ἰουδαίων σῶσον σεαυτόν 23:37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
23:38 ἦν δὲ καὶ ἐπιγραφὴ γεγραμμένη ἐπ᾽ αὐτῷ γράμμασιν ἑλληνικοῖς, καὶ ῥωμαικοῖς καὶ ἑβραικοῖς, οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν ἰουδαίων 23:38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
23:39 εἷς δὲ τῶν κρεμασθέντων κακούργων ἐβλασφήμει αὖτὸν λέγων, εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ χριστός, σῶσον σεαυτὸν καὶ ἡμᾶς 23:39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
Luke 23:40 Respondens autem alter increpabat eum, dicens: Neque tu times Deum, quod in eadem damnatione es. Luke 23:40 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἕτερος ἐπετίμα αὐτῷ λέγων, οὐδὲ φοβῇ σὺ τὸν θεόν ὅτι ἐν τῷ αὐτῷ κρίματι εἶ Luke 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
23:41 Et nos quidem juste, nam digna factis recipimus: hic vero nihil mali gessit. 23:41 καὶ ἡμεῖς μὲν δικαίως ἄξια γὰρ ὧν ἐπράξαμεν ἀπολαμβάνομεν οὗτος δὲ οὐδὲν ἄτοπον ἔπραξεν 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
23:42 καὶ ἔλεγεν τᾠ ἰησοῦ μνήσθητί μου κύριε, ὅταν ἔλθῃς ἕν τῃ βασιλείᾳ σου 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.
23:43 Et dixit illi Jesus: Amen dico tibi: hodie mecum eris in paradiso. 23:43 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἰησοῦς, ἀμήν λέγω σοι σήμερον μετ᾽ ἐμοῦ ἔσῃ ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
23:44 ἦν δὲ ὡσεὶ ὥρα ἕκτη καὶ σκότος ἐγένετο ἐφ᾽ ὅλην τὴν γῆν ἕως ὥρας ἐννάτης 23:44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
23:45 καὶ ἐσκοτίσθη ὁ ἥλιος, καί ἐσχίσθη τὸ καταπέτασμα τοῦ ναοῦ μέσον 23:45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.
23:46 Et clamans voce magna Jesus ait: Pater, in manus tuas commendo spiritum meum. Et hæc dicens, expiravit. 23:46 καὶ φωνήσας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν πάτερ εἰς χεῖράς σου παραθήσομαι τὸ πνεῦμά μου καὶ ταῦτα εἰπὼν ἐξέπνευσεν 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.
23:47 Videns autem centurio quod factum fuerat, glorificavit Deum, dicens: Vere hic homo justus erat. 23:47 ἰδὼν δὲ ὁ ἑκατόνταρχος τὸ γενόμενον ἐδόξασεν τὸν θεὸν λέγων, ὄντως ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος ἦν 23:47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.
23:48 καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαραγενόμενοι ὄχλοι ἐπὶ τὴν θεωρίαν ταύτην θεωροῦντες τὰ γενόμενα τύπτοντες ἑαυτῶν τὰ στήθη ὑπέστρεφον 23:48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.
23:49 Stabant autem omnes noti ejus a longe, et mulieres, quæ secutæ eum erant a Galilæa, hæc videntes. 23:49 εἱστήκεισαν δὲ πάντες οἱ γνωστοὶ αὐτοῦ μακρόθεν καὶ γυναῖκες αἱ συνακολουθήσασαι αὐτῷ ἀπὸ τῆς γαλιλαίας ὁρῶσαι ταῦτα 23:49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.
Luke 23:50 Et ecce vir nomine Joseph, qui erat decurio, vir bonus et justus: Luke 23:50 καὶ ἰδού, ἀνὴρ ὀνόματι ἰωσὴφ βουλευτὴς ὑπάρχων ἀνὴρ ἀγαθὸς καὶ δίκαιος Luke 23:50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:
23:51 hic non consenserat consilio, et actibus eorum: ab Arimathæa civitate Judææ, qui exspectabat et ipse regnum Dei: 23:51 οὗτος οὐκ ἦν συγκατατεθειμένος τῇ βουλῇ καὶ τῇ πράξει αὐτῶν ἀπὸ ἁριμαθαίας πόλεως τῶν ἰουδαίων ὃς καὶ προσεδέχετο καὶ αὐτὸς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ 23:51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.
23:52 hic accessit ad Pilatum et petiit corpus Jesu: 23:52 οὗτος προσελθὼν τῷ πιλάτῳ ᾐτήσατο τὸ σῶμα τοῦ ἰησοῦ 23:52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.
23:53 et depositum involvit sindone, et posuit eum in monumento exciso, in quo nondum quisquam positus fuerat. 23:53 καὶ καθελὼν αὐτὸ ἐνετύλιξεν αὐτὸ σινδόνι καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὸ ἐν μνήματι λαξευτῷ οὗ οὐκ ἦν οὐδέπω οὐδεὶς κείμενος 23:53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.
23:54 Et dies erat parasceves, et sabbatum illucescebat. 23:54 καὶ ἡμέρα ἦν παρασκευή καὶ σάββατον ἐπέφωσκεν 23:54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.
23:55 κατακολουθήσασαι δὲ καὶ γυναῖκες αἵτινες ἦσαν συνεληλυθυῖαι αὐτῷ ἐκ τῆς γαλιλαίας ἐθεάσαντο τὸ μνημεῖον καὶ ὡς ἐτέθη τὸ σῶμα αὐτοῦ 23:55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.
23:56 Et revertentes paraverunt aromata, et unguenta: et sabbato quidem siluerunt secundum mandatum. 23:56 ὑποστρέψασαι δὲ ἡτοίμασαν ἀρώματα καὶ μύρα καὶ τὸ μὲν σάββατον ἡσύχασαν κατὰ τὴν ἐντολήν 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
