4:2 (quamquam Jesus non baptizaret, sed discipuli ejus), 4:2 kaitoige ihsouj autoj ouk ebaptizen all oi maqhtai autou 4:2 (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)
4:3 reliquit Judæam, et abiit iterum in Galilæam. 4:3 afhken thn ioudaian kai aphlqen palin eij thn galilaian 4:3 He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
4:4 Oportebat autem eum transire per Samariam. 4:4 edei de auton dierxesqai dia thj samareiaj 4:4 And he must needs go through Samaria.
4:5 Venit ergo in civitatem Samariæ, quæ dicitur Sichar, juxta prædium quod dedit Jacob Joseph filio suo. 4:5 erxetai oun eij polin thj samareiaj legomenhn suxar plhsion tou xwriou o edwken iakwb iwshf tw uiw autou 4:5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
4:6 Erat autem ibi fons Jacob. Jesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere, sedebat sic supra fontem. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.
4:7 Venit mulier de Samaria haurire aquam. Dicit ei Jesus: Da mihi bibere. 4:7 erxetai gunh ek thj samareiaj antlhsai udwr legei auth o ihsouj doj moi piein 4:7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.
4:8 (Discipuli enim ejus abierant in civitatem ut cibos emerent.) 4:8 oi gar maqhtai autou apelhluqeisan eij thn polin ina trofaj agoraswsin 4:8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)
4:9 Dicit ergo ei mulier illa Samaritana: Quomodo tu, Judæus cum sis, bibere a me poscis, quæ sum mulier Samaritana? non enim coutuntur Judæi Samaritanis. 4:9 legei oun autw h gunh h samareitij pwj su ioudaioj wn par emou piein aiteij oushj gunaikoj samareitidoj ou gar sugxrwntai ioudaioi samareitaij 4:9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.
John 4:10 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Si scires donum Dei, et quis est qui dicit tibi: Da mihi bibere, tu forsitan petisses ab eo, et dedisset tibi aquam vivam. John 4:10 apekriqh ihsouj kai eipen auth ei hdeij thn dwrean tou qeou kai tij estin o legwn soi doj moi piein su an hthsaj auton kai edwken an soi udwr zwn John 4:10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
4:11 Dicit ei mulier: Domine, neque in quo haurias habes, et puteus altus est: unde ergo habes aquam vivam? 4:11 legei autw h gunh kurie oute antlhma exeij kai to frear estin baqu poqen oun exeij to udwr to zwn 4:11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?
4:12 Numquid tu major es patre nostro Jacob, qui dedit nobis puteum, et ipse ex eo bibit, et filii ejus, et pecora ejus? 4:12 mh su meizwn ei tou patroj hmwn iakwb oj edwken hmin to frear kai autoj ec autou epien kai oi uioi autou kai ta qremmata autou 4:12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?
4:13 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei: Omnis qui bibit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum; 4:13 apekriqh o ihsouj kai eipen auth paj o pinwn ek tou udatoj toutou diyhsei palin 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:
4:14 qui autem biberit ex aqua quam ego dabo ei, non sitiet in æternum: sed aqua quam ego dabo ei, fiet in eo fons aquæ salientis in vitam æternam. 4:14 oj d an pih ek tou udatoj ou egw dwsw autw ou mh diyhsh eij ton aiwna alla to udwr o dwsw autw genhsetai en autw phgh udatoj allomenou eij zwhn aiwnion 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
4:15 Dicit ad eum mulier: Domine, da mihi hanc aquam, ut non sitiam, neque veniam huc haurire. 4:15 legei proj auton h gunh kurie doj moi touto to udwr ina mh diyw mhde erxwmai enqade antlein 4:15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.
4:16 Dicit ei Jesus: Vade, voca virum tuum, et veni huc. 4:16 legei auth o ihsouj upage fwnhson ton andra sou kai elqe enqade 4:16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
4:17 Respondit mulier, et dixit: Non habeo virum. Dicit ei Jesus: Bene dixisti, quia non habeo virum; 4:17 apekriqh h gunh kai eipen ouk exw andra legei auth o ihsouj kalwj eipaj oti andra ouk exw 4:17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
4:18 quinque enim viros habuisti, et nunc, quem habes, non est tuus vir: hoc vere dixisti. 4:18 pente gar andraj esxej kai nun on exeij ouk estin sou anhr touto alhqej eirhkaj 4:18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.
4:19 Dicit ei mulier: Domine, video quia propheta es tu. 4:19 legei autw h gunh kurie qewrw oti profhthj ei su 4:19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
John 4:20 Patres nostri in monte hoc adoraverunt, et vos dicitis, quia Jerosolymis est locus ubi adorare oportet. John 4:20 oi paterej hmwn en toutw tw orei prosekunhsan kai umeij legete oti en ierosolumoij estin o topoj opou dei proskunein John 4:20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
4:21 Dicit ei Jesus: Mulier, crede mihi, quia venit hora, quando neque in monte hoc, neque in Jerosolymis adorabitis Patrem. 4:21 legei auth o ihsouj gunai pisteuson moi oti erxetai wra ote oute en tw orei toutw oute en ierosolumoij proskunhsete tw patri 4:21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
4:22 Vos adoratis quod nescitis: nos adoramus quod scimus, quia salus ex Judæis est. 4:22 umeij proskuneite o ouk oidate hmeij proskunoumen o oidamen oti h swthria ek twn ioudaiwn estin 4:22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
4:23 Sed venit hora, et nunc est, quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem in spiritu et veritate. Nam et Pater tales quærit, qui adorent eum. 4:23 all erxetai wra kai nun estin ote oi alhqinoi proskunhtai proskunhsousin tw patri en pneumati kai alhqeia kai gar o pathr toioutouj zhtei touj proskunountaj auton 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
4:24 Spiritus est Deus: et eos qui adorant eum, in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare. 4:24 pneuma o qeoj kai touj proskunountaj auton en pneumati kai alhqeia dei proskunein 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
4:25 Dicit ei mulier: Scio quia Messias venit (qui dicitur Christus): cum ergo venerit ille, nobis annuntiabit omnia. 4:25 legei autw h gunh oida oti messiaj erxetai o legomenoj xristoj otan elqh ekeinoj anaggelei hmin panta 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
4:26 Dicit ei Jesus: Ego sum, qui loquor te. 4:26 legei auth o ihsouj egw eimi o lalwn soi 4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
4:27 Et continuo venerunt discipuli ejus, et mirabantur quia cum muliere loquebatur. Nemo tamen dixit: Quid quæris? aut, Quid loqueris cum ea? 4:27 kai epi toutw hlqon oi maqhtai autou kai eqaumasan oti meta gunaikoj elalei oudeij mentoi eipen ti zhteij h ti laleij met authj 4:27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
4:28 Reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier, et abiit in civitatem, et dicit illis hominibus: 4:28 afhken oun thn udrian authj h gunh kai aphlqen eij thn polin kai legei toij anqrwpoij 4:28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
4:29 Venite, et videte hominem qui dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci: numquid ipse est Christus? 4:29 deute idete anqrwpon oj eipen moi panta osa epoihsa mhti outoj estin o xristoj 4:29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
John 4:30 Exierunt ergo de civitate et veniebant ad eum. John 4:30 echlqon oun ek thj polewj kai hrxonto proj auton John 4:30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
4:31 Interea rogabant eum discipuli, dicentes: Rabbi, manduca. 4:31 en de tw metacu hrwtwn auton oi maqhtai legontej rabbi fage 4:31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
4:32 Ille autem dicit eis: Ego cibum habeo manducare, quem vos nescitis. 4:32 o de eipen autoij egw brwsin exw fagein hn umeij ouk oidate 4:32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.
4:33 Dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem: Numquid aliquis attulit ei manducare? 4:33 elegon oun oi maqhtai proj allhlouj mh tij hnegken autw fagein 4:33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?
4:34 Dicit eis Jesus: Meus cibus est ut faciam voluntatem ejus qui misit me, ut perficiam opus ejus. 4:34 legei autoij o ihsouj emon brwma estin ina poiw to qelhma tou pemyantoj me kai teleiwsw autou to ergon 4:34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
4:35 Nonne vos dicitis quod adhuc quatuor menses sunt, et messis venit? Ecce dico vobis: levate oculos vestros, et videte regiones, quia albæ sunt jam ad messem. 4:35 oux umeij legete oti eti tetramhnon estin kai o qerismoj erxetai idou legw umin eparate touj ofqalmouj umwn kai qeasasqe taj xwraj oti leukai eisin proj qerismon hdh 4:35 Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.
4:36 Et qui metit, mercedem accipit, et congregat fructum in vitam æternam: ut et qui seminat, simul gaudeat, et qui metit. 4:36 kai o qerizwn misqon lambanei kai sunagei karpon eij zwhn aiwnion ina kai o speirwn omou xairh kai o qerizwn 4:36 And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together.
4:37 In hoc enim est verbum verum: quia alius est qui seminat, et alius est qui metit. 4:37 en gar toutw o logoj estin alhqinoj oti alloj estin o speirwn kai alloj o qerizwn 4:37 And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.
4:38 Ego misi vos metere quod vos non laborastis: alii laboraverunt, et vos in labores eorum introistis. 4:38 egw apesteila umaj qerizein o oux umeij kekopiakate alloi kekopiakasin kai umeij eij ton kopon autwn eiselhluqate 4:38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.
4:39 Ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum, propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis: Quia dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci. 4:39 ek de thj polewj ekeinhj polloi episteusan eij auton twn samareitwn dia ton logon thj gunaikoj marturoushj oti eipen moi panta osa epoihsa 4:39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.
John 4:40 Cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani, rogaverunt eum ut ibi maneret. Et mansit ibi duos dies. John 4:40 wj oun hlqon proj auton oi samareitai hrwtwn auton meinai par autoij kai emeinen ekei duo hmeraj John 4:40 So when the Samaritans were come unto him, they besought him that he would tarry with them: and he abode there two days.
4:41 Et multo plures crediderunt in eum propter sermonem ejus. 4:41 kai pollw pleiouj episteusan dia ton logon autou 4:41 And many more believed because of his own word;
4:42 Et mulieri dicebant: Quia jam non propter tuam loquelam credimus: ipsi enim audivimus, et scimus quia hic est vere Salvator mundi. 4:42 th te gunaiki elegon oti ouketi dia thn shn lalian pisteuomen autoi gar akhkoamen kai oidamen oti outoj estin alhqwj o swthr tou kosmou o xristoj 4:42 And said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world.
4:43 Post duos autem dies exiit inde, et abiit in Galilæam. 4:43 meta de taj duo hmeraj echlqen ekeiqen kai aphlqen eij thn galilaian 4:43 Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.
4:44 Ipse enim Jesus testimonium perhibuit, quia propheta in sua patria honorem non habet. 4:44 autoj gar o ihsouj emarturhsen oti profhthj en th idia patridi timhn ouk exei 4:44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country.
4:45 Cum ergo venisset in Galilæam, exceperunt eum Galilæi, cum omnia vidissent quæ fecerat Jerosolymis in die festo: et ipsi enim venerant ad diem festum. 4:45 ote oun hlqen eij thn galilaian edecanto auton oi galilaioi panta ewrakotej a epoihsen en ierosolumoij en th eorth kai autoi gar hlqon eij thn eorthn 4:45 Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast.
4:46 Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilææ, ubi fecit aquam vinum. Et erat quidam regulus, cujus filius infirmabatur Capharnaum. 4:46 hlqen oun o ihsouj palin eij thn kana thj galilaiaj opou epoihsen to udwr oinon kai hn tij basilikoj ou o uioj hsqenei en kapernaoum 4:46 So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum.
4:47 Hic cum audisset quia Jesus adveniret a Judæa in Galilæam, abiit ad eum, et rogabat eum ut descenderet, et sanaret filium ejus: incipiebat enim mori. 4:47 outoj akousaj oti ihsouj hkei ek thj ioudaiaj eij thn galilaian aphlqen proj auton kai hrwta auton ina katabh kai iashtai autou ton uion hmellen gar apoqnhskein 4:47 When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death.
4:48 Dixit ergo Jesus ad eum: Nisi signa et prodigia videritis, non creditis. 4:48 eipen oun o ihsouj proj auton ean mh shmeia kai terata idhte ou mh pisteushte 4:48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
4:49 Dicit ad eum regulus: Domine, descende priusquam moriatur filius meus. 4:49 legei proj auton o basilikoj kurie katabhqi prin apoqanein to paidion mou 4:49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.
John 4:50 Dicit ei Jesus: Vade, filius tuus vivit. Credidit homo sermoni quem dixit ei Jesus, et ibat. John 4:50 legei autw o ihsouj poreuou o uioj sou zh kai episteusen o anqrwpoj tw logw w eipen autw ihsouj kai eporeueto John 4:50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.
4:51 Jam autem eo descendente, servi occurrerunt ei, et nuntiaverunt dicentes, quia filius ejus viveret. 4:51 hdh de autou katabainontoj oi douloi autou aphnthsan autw kai aphggeilan legontej oti o paij sou zh 4:51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
4:52 Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis in qua melius habuerit. Et dixerunt ei: Quia heri hora septima reliquit eum febris. 4:52 epuqeto oun par autwn thn wran en h komyoteron esxen kai eipon autw oti xqej wran ebdomhn afhken auton o puretoj 4:52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
4:53 Cognovit ergo pater, quia illa hora erat in qua dixit ei Jesus: Filius tuus vivit; et credidit ipse et domus ejus tota. 4:53 egnw oun o pathr oti en ekeinh th wra en h eipen autw o ihsouj oti o uioj sou zh kai episteusen autoj kai h oikia autou olh 4:53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour, in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth: and himself believed, and his whole house.
4:54 Hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Jesus, cum venisset a Judæa in Galilæam. 4:54 touto palin deuteron shmeion epoihsen o ihsouj elqwn ek thj ioudaiaj eij thn galilaian 4:54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judaea into Galilee.
