John 18:1 tauta eipwn o ihsouj echlqen sun toij maqhtaij autou peran tou xeimarrou twn kedrwn opou hn khpoj eij on eishlqen autoj kai oi maqhtai autou John 18:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.
18:2 Sciebat autem et Judas, qui tradebat eum, locum: quia frequenter Jesus convenerat illuc cum discipulis suis. 18:2 hdei de kai ioudaj o paradidouj auton ton topon oti pollakij sunhxqh o ihsouj ekei meta twn maqhtwn autou 18:2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
18:3 Judas ergo cum accepisset cohortem, et a pontificibus et pharisæis ministros, venit illuc cum laternis, et facibus, et armis. 18:3 o oun ioudaj labwn thn speiran kai ek twn arxierewn kai farisaiwn uphretaj erxetai ekei meta fanwn kai lampadwn kai oplwn 18:3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
18:4 Jesus itaque sciens omnia quæ ventura erant super eum, processit, et dixit eis: Quem quæritis? 18:4 ihsouj oun eidwj panta ta erxomena ep auton ecelqwn eipen autoij tina zhteite 18:4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
18:5 Responderunt ei: Jesum Nazarenum. Dicit eis Jesus: Ego sum. Stabat autem et Judas, qui tradebat eum, cum ipsis. 18:5 apekriqhsan autw ihsoun ton nazwraion legei autoij o ihsouj egw eimi eisthkei de kai ioudaj o paradidouj auton met autwn 18:5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
18:6 Ut ergo dixit eis: Ego sum: abierunt retrorsum, et ceciderunt in terram. 18:6 wj oun eipen autoij oti egw eimi aphlqon eij ta opisw kai epeson xamai 18:6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
18:7 Iterum ergo interrogavit eos: Quem quæritis? Illi autem dixerunt: Jesum Nazarenum. 18:7 palin oun autouj ephrwthsen tina zhteite oi de eipon ihsoun ton nazwraion 18:7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
18:8 Respondit Jesus: Dixi vobis, quia ego sum: si ergo me quæritis, sinite hos abire. 18:8 apekriqh o ihsouj eipon umin oti egw eimi ei oun eme zhteite afete toutouj upagein 18:8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:
18:9 Ut impleretur sermo, quem dixit: Quia quos dedisti mihi, non perdidi ex eis quemquam. 18:9 ina plhrwqh o logoj on eipen oti ouj dedwkaj moi ouk apwlesa ec autwn oudena 18:9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
John 18:10 Simon ergo Petrus habens gladium eduxit eum: et percussit pontificis servum, et abscidit auriculam ejus dexteram. Erat autem nomen servo Malchus. John 18:10 simwn oun petroj exwn maxairan eilkusen authn kai epaisen ton tou arxierewj doulon kai apekoyen autou to wtion to decion hn de onoma tw doulw malxoj John 18:10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
18:11 Dixit ergo Jesus Petro: Mitte gladium tuum in vaginam. Calicem, quem dedit mihi Pater, non bibam illum? 18:11 eipen oun o ihsouj tw petrw bale thn maxairan sou eij thn qhkhn to pothrion o dedwken moi o pathr ou mh piw auto 18:11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
18:12 Cohors ergo, et tribunus, et ministri Judæorum comprehenderunt Jesum, et ligaverunt eum. 18:12 h oun speira kai o xiliarxoj kai oi uphretai twn ioudaiwn sunelabon ton ihsoun kai edhsan auton 18:12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,
18:13 Et adduxerunt eum ad Annam primum: erat enim socer Caiphæ, qui erat pontifex anni illius. 18:13 kai aphgagon auton proj annan prwton hn gar penqeroj tou kaiafa oj hn arxiereuj tou eniautou ekeinou 18:13 And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
18:14 Erat autem Caiphas, qui consilium dederat Judæis: Quia expedit unum hominem mori pro populo. 18:14 hn de kaiafaj o sumbouleusaj toij ioudaioij oti sumferei ena anqrwpon apolesqai uper tou laou 18:14 Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
18:15 Sequebatur autem Jesum Simon Petrus, et alius discipulus. Discipulus autem ille erat notus pontifici, et introivit cum Jesu in atrium pontificis. 18:15 hkolouqei de tw ihsou simwn petroj kai alloj maqhthj o de maqhthj ekeinoj hn gnwstoj tw arxierei kai suneishlqen tw ihsou eij thn aulhn tou arxierewj 18:15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.
18:16 Petrus autem stabat ad ostium foris. Exivit ergo discipulus alius, qui erat notus pontifici, et dixit ostiariæ: et introduxit Petrum. 18:16 o de petroj eisthkei proj th qura ecw echlqen oun o maqhthj o alloj oj hn gnwstoj tw arxierei kai eipen th qurwrw kai eishgagen ton petron 18:16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
18:17 Dicit ergo Petro ancilla ostiaria: Numquid et tu ex discipulis es hominis istius? Dicit ille: Non sum. 18:17 legei oun h paidiskh h qurwroj tw petrw mh kai su ek twn maqhtwn ei tou anqrwpou toutou legei ekeinoj ouk eimi 18:17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
18:18 Stabant autem servi et ministri ad prunas, quia frigus erat, et calefaciebant se: erat autem cum eis et Petrus stans, et calefaciens se. 18:18 eisthkeisan de oi douloi kai oi uphretai anqrakian pepoihkotej oti yuxoj hn kai eqermainonto hn de met autwn o petroj estwj kai qermainomenoj 18:18 And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.
18:19 Pontifex ergo interrogavit Jesum de discipulis suis, et de doctrina ejus. 18:19 o oun arxiereuj hrwthsen ton ihsoun peri twn maqhtwn autou kai peri thj didaxhj autou 18:19 The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.
John 18:20 Respondit ei Jesus: Ego palam locutus sum mundo: ego semper docui in synagoga, et in templo, quo omnes Judæi conveniunt, et in occulto locutus sum nihil. John 18:20 apekriqh autw o ihsouj egw parrhsia elalhsa tw kosmw egw pantote edidaca en th sunagwgh kai en tw ierw opou pantote oi ioudaioi sunerxontai kai en kruptw elalhsa ouden John 18:20 Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.
18:21 Quid me interrogas? interroga eos qui audierunt quid locutus sim ipsis: ecce hi sciunt quæ dixerim ego. 18:21 ti me eperwtaj eperwthson touj akhkootaj ti elalhsa autoij ide outoi oidasin a eipon egw 18:21 Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.
18:22 Hæc autem cum dixisset, unus assistens ministrorum dedit alapam Jesu, dicens: Sic respondes pontifici? 18:22 tauta de autou eipontoj eij twn uphretwn paresthkwj edwken rapisma tw ihsou eipwn outwj apokrinh tw arxierei 18:22 And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
18:23 Respondit ei Jesus: Si male locutus sum, testimonium perhibe de malo: si autem bene, quid me cædis? 18:23 apekriqh autw o ihsouj ei kakwj elalhsa marturhson peri tou kakou ei de kalwj ti me dereij 18:23 Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
18:24 Et misit eum Annas ligatum ad Caipham pontificem. 18:24 apesteilen oun auton o annaj dedemenon proj kaiafan ton arxierea 18:24 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
18:25 Erat autem Simon Petrus stans, et calefaciens se. Dixerunt ergo ei: Numquid et tu ex discipulis ejus es? Negavit ille, et dixit: Non sum. 18:25 hn de simwn petroj estwj kai qermainomenoj eipon oun autw mh kai su ek twn maqhtwn autou ei hrnhsato ekeinoj kai eipen ouk eimi 18:25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.
18:26 Dicit ei unus ex servis pontificis, cognatus ejus, cujus abscidit Petrus auriculam: Nonne ego te vidi in horto cum illo? 18:26 legei eij ek twn doulwn tou arxierewj suggenhj wn ou apekoyen petroj to wtion ouk egw se eidon en tw khpw met autou 18:26 One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
18:27 Iterum ergo negavit Petrus: et statim gallus cantavit. 18:27 palin oun hrnhsato o petroj kai euqewj alektwr efwnhsen 18:27 Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
18:28 Adducunt ergo Jesum a Caipha in prætorium. Erat autem mane: et ipsi non introierunt in prætorium, ut non contaminarentur, sed ut manducarent Pascha. 18:28 agousin oun ton ihsoun apo tou kaiafa eij to praitwrion hn de prwia kai autoi ouk eishlqon eij to praitwrion ina mh mianqwsin all ina fagwsin to pasxa 18:28 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.
18:29 Exivit ergo Pilatus ad eos foras, et dixit: Quam accusationem affertis adversus hominem hunc? 18:29 echlqen oun o pilatoj proj autouj kai eipen tina kathgorian ferete kata tou anqrwpou toutou 18:29 Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?
John 18:30 Responderunt, et dixerunt ei: Si non esset hic malefactor, non tibi tradidissemus eum. John 18:30 apekriqhsan kai eipon autw ei mh hn outoj kakopoioj ouk an soi paredwkamen auton John 18:30 They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.
18:31 Dixit ergo eis Pilatus: Accipite eum vos, et secundum legem vestram judicate eum. Dixerunt ergo ei Judæi: Nobis non licet interficere quemquam. 18:31 eipen oun autoij o pilatoj labete auton umeij kai kata ton nomon umwn krinate auton eipon oun autw oi ioudaioi hmin ouk ecestin apokteinai oudena 18:31 Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
18:32 Ut sermo Jesu impleretur, quem dixit, significans qua morte esset moriturus. 18:32 ina o logoj tou ihsou plhrwqh on eipen shmainwn poiw qanatw hmellen apoqnhskein 18:32 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.
18:33 Introivit ergo iterum in prætorium Pilatus: et vocavit Jesum, et dixit ei: Tu es rex Judæorum? 18:33 Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? 18:33 eishlqen oun eij to praitwrion palin o pilatoj kai efwnhsen ton ihsoun kai eipen autw su ei o basileuj twn ioudaiwn
18:34 Respondit Jesus: A temetipso hoc dicis, an alii dixerunt tibi de me? 18:34 apekriqh autw o ihsouj af eautou su touto legeij h alloi soi eipon peri emou 18:34 Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
18:35 Respondit Pilatus: Numquid ego Judæus sum? gens tua et pontifices tradiderunt te mihi: quid fecisti? 18:35 apekriqh o pilatoj mhti egw ioudaioj eimi to eqnoj to son kai oi arxiereij paredwkan se emoi ti epoihsaj 18:35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
18:36 Respondit Jesus: Regnum meum non est de hoc mundo. Si ex hoc mundo esset regnum meum, ministri mei utique decertarent ut non traderer Judæis: nunc autem regnum meum non est hinc. 18:36 apekriqh o ihsouj h basileia h emh ouk estin ek tou kosmou toutou ei ek tou kosmou toutou hn h basileia h emh oi uphretai an oi emoi hgwnizonto ina mh paradoqw toij ioudaioij nun de h basileia h emh ouk estin enteuqen 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
18:37 Dixit itaque ei Pilatus: Ergo rex es tu? Respondit Jesus: Tu dicis quia rex sum ego. Ego in hoc natus sum, et ad hoc veni in mundum, ut testimonium perhibeam veritati: omnis qui est ex veritate, audit vocem meam. 18:37 eipen oun autw o pilatoj oukoun basileuj ei su apekriqh o ihsouj su legeij oti basileuj eimi egw egw eij touto gegennhmai kai eij touto elhluqa eij ton kosmon ina marturhsw th alhqeia paj o wn ek thj alhqeiaj akouei mou thj fwnhj 18:37 Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
18:38 Dicit ei Pilatus: Quid est veritas? Et cum hoc dixisset, iterum exivit ad Judæos, et dicit eis: Ego nullam invenio in eo causam. 18:38 legei autw o pilatoj ti estin alhqeia kai touto eipwn palin echlqen proj touj ioudaiouj kai legei autoij egw oudemian aitian euriskw en autw 18:38 Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
18:39 Est autem consuetudo vobis ut unum dimittam vobis in Pascha: vultis ergo dimittam vobis regem Judæorum? 18:39 estin de sunhqeia umin ina ena umin apolusw en tw pasxa boulesqe oun umin apolusw ton basilea twn ioudaiwn 18:39 But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
John 18:40 Clamaverunt ergo rursum omnes, dicentes: Non hunc, sed Barabbam. Erat autem Barabbas latro. John 18:40 ekraugasan oun palin pantej legontej mh touton alla ton barabban hn de o barabbaj lhsthj John 18:40 Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
