MATTHEW CHAPTER 4

Latin VulgateGreek Textus ReceptusEnglish King James
Matthew 4:1 Tunc Jesus ductus est in desertum a Spiritu, ut tentaretur a diabolo. Matthew 4:1 τότε ὁ ἰησοῦς ἀνήχθη εἰς τὴν ἔρημον ὑπὸ τοῦ πνεύματος πειρασθῆναι ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου Matthew 4:1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
4:2 Et cum jejunasset quadraginta diebus, et quadraginta noctibus, postea esuriit. 4:2 καὶ νηστεύσας ἡμέρας τεσσαράκοντα καὶ νύκτας τεσσαράκοντα ὕστερον ἐπείνασεν 4:2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
4:3 Et accedens tentator dixit ei: Si Filius Dei es, dic ut lapides isti panes fiant. 4:3 καὶ προσελθὼν αὐτῷ ὁ πειράζων εἶπεν εἰ υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ θεοῦ εἰπὲ ἵνα οἱ λίθοι οὗτοι ἄρτοι γένωνται 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4:4 Qui respondens dixit: Scriptum est: Non in solo pane vivit homo, sed in omni verbo, quod procedit de ore Dei. 4:4 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν γέγραπται οὐκ ἐπ᾽ ἄρτῳ μόνῳ ζήσεται ἄνθρωπος ἀλλ᾽ ἐπὶ παντὶ ῥήματι ἐκπορευομένῳ διὰ στόματος θεοῦ 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
4:5 Tunc assumpsit eum diabolus in sanctam civitatem, et statuit eum super pinnaculum templi, 4:5 τότε παραλαμβάνει αὐτὸν ὁ διάβολος εἰς τὴν ἁγίαν πόλιν καὶ ἵστησιν αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸ πτερύγιον τοῦ ἱεροῦ 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
4:6 et dixit ei: Si Filius Dei es, mitte te deorsum. Scriptum est enim: Quia angelis suis mandavit de te, et in manibus tollent te, ne forte offendas ad lapidem pedem tuum. 4:6 καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ εἰ υἱὸς εἶ τοῦ θεοῦ βάλε σεαυτὸν κάτω γέγραπται γὰρ ὅτι τοῖς ἀγγέλοις αὑτοῦ ἐντελεῖται περὶ σοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ χειρῶν ἀροῦσίν σε μήποτε προσκόψῃς πρὸς λίθον τὸν πόδα σου 4:6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
4:7 Ait illi Jesus: Rursum scriptum est: Non tentabis Dominum Deum tuum. 4:7 ἕφη αὐτῷ ὁ ἰησοῦς πάλιν γέγραπται οὐκ ἐκπειράσεις κύριον τὸν φεόν σου 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
4:8 Iterum assumpsit eum diabolus in montem excelsum valde: et ostendit ei omnia regna mundi, et gloriam eorum, 4:8 πάλιν παραλαμβάνει αὐτὸν ὁ διάβολος εἰς ὄρος ὑψηλὸν λίαν καὶ δείκνυσιν αὐτῷ πάσας τὰς βασιλείας τοῦ κόσμου καὶ τὴν δόξαν αὐτῶν 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
4:9 et dixit ei: Hæc omnia tibi dabo, si cadens adoraveris me. 4:9 καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ταῦτα πάντα σοι δώσω ἐὰν πεσὼν προσκυνήσῃς μοι 4:9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
Matthew 4:10 Tunc dicit ei Jesus: Vade Satana: Scriptum est enim: Dominum Deum tuum adorabis, et illi soli servies. Matthew 4:10 τότε λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ ἰησοῦς ὕπαγε σατανᾶ γέγραπται γὰρ κύριον τὸν φεόν σου προσκυνήσεις καὶ αὐτῷ μόνῳ λατρεύσεις Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
4:11 Tunc reliquit eum diabolus: et ecce angeli accesserunt, et ministrabant ei. 4:11 τότε ἀφίησιν αὐτὸν ὁ διάβολος καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄγγελοι προσῆλθον καὶ διηκόνουν αὐτῷ 4:11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
4:12 Cum autem audisset Jesus quod Joannes traditus esset, secessit in Galilæam: 4:12 ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἰωάννης παρεδόθη ἀνεχώρησεν εἰς τὴν γαλιλαίαν 4:12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
4:13 et, relicta civitate Nazareth, venit, et habitavit in Capharnaum maritima, in finibus Zabulon et Nephthalim: 4:13 καὶ καταλιπὼν τὴν ναζαρὲτ ἐλθὼν κατῴκησεν εἰς καπερναοὺμ τὴν παραθαλασσίαν ἐν ὁρίοις ζαβουλὼν καὶ νεφθαλεὶμ 4:13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
4:14 ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per Isaiam prophetam: 4:14 ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ ἡσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος 4:14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
4:15 [Terra Zabulon, et terra Nephthalim, via maris trans Jordanem, Galilæa gentium: 4:15 γῆ ζαβουλὼν καὶ γῆ νεφθαλεὶμ ὁδὸν θαλάσσης πέραν τοῦ ἰορδάνου γαλιλαία τῶν ἐθνῶν 4:15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
4:16 populus, qui sedebat in tenebris, vidit lucem magnam: et sedentibus in regione umbræ mortis, lux orta est eis.] 4:16 ὁ λαὸς ὁ καθήμενος ἐν σκότει εἶδε φῶς μέγα καὶ τοῖς καθημένοις ἐν χώρᾳ καὶ σκιᾷ θανάτου φῶς ἀνέτειλεν αὐτοῖς 4:16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
4:17 Exinde cœpit Jesus prædicare, et dicere: Pœnitentiam agite: appropinquavit enim regnum cælorum. 4:17 ἀπὸ τότε ἤρξατο ὁ ἰησοῦς κηρύσσειν καὶ λέγειν μετανοεῖτε ἤγγικεν γὰρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
4:18 Ambulans autem Jesus juxta mare Galilææ, vidit duos fratres, Simonem, qui vocatur Petrus, et Andream fratrem ejus, mittentes rete in mare (erant enim piscatores), 4:18 περιπατῶν δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς γαλιλαίας εἶδεν δύο ἀδελφοὺς σίμωνα τὸν λεγόμενον πέτρον καὶ ἀνδρέαν τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ βάλλοντας ἀμφίβληστρον εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν ἦσαν γὰρ ἁλιεῖς 4:18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
4:19 et ait illis: Venite post me, et faciam vos fieri piscatores hominum. 4:19 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς δεῦτε ὀπίσω μου καὶ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς ἁλιεῖς ἀνθρώπων 4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
Matthew 4:20 At illi continuo relictis retibus secuti sunt eum. Matthew 4:20 οἱ δὲ εὐθέως ἀφέντες τὰ δίκτυα ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ Matthew 4:20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
4:21 Et procedens inde, vidit alios duos fratres, Jacobum Zebedæi, et Joannem fratrem ejus, in navi cum Zebedæo patre eorum, reficientes retia sua: et vocavit eos. 4:21 καὶ προβὰς ἐκεῖθεν εἶδεν ἄλλους δύο ἀδελφοὺς ἰάκωβον τὸν τοῦ ζεβεδαίου καὶ ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ μετὰ ζεβεδαίου τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῶν καταρτίζοντας τὰ δίκτυα αὑτῶν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτούς 4:21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
4:22 Illi autem statim relictis retibus et patre, secuti sunt eum. 4:22 οἱ δὲ εὐθέως ἀφέντες τὸ πλοῖον καὶ τὸν πατέρα αὑτῶν ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ 4:22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
4:23 Et circuibat Jesus totam Galilæam, docens in synagogis eorum, et prædicans Evangelium regni: et sanans omnem languorem, et omnem infirmitatem in populo. 4:23 καὶ περιῆγεν ὅλην τὴν γαλιλαίαν ὁ ἰησοῦς διδάσκων ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς αὐτῶν καὶ κηρύσσων τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τῆς βασιλείας καὶ θεραπεύων πᾶσαν νόσον καὶ πᾶσαν μαλακίαν ἐν τῷ λαῷ 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
4:24 Et abiit opinio ejus in totam Syriam, et obtulerunt ei omnes male habentes, variis languoribus, et tormentis comprehensos, et qui dæmonia habebant, et lunaticos, et paralyticos, et curavit eos: 4:24 καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἡ ἀκοὴ αὐτοῦ εἰς ὅλην τὴν συρίαν καὶ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας ποικίλαις νόσοις καὶ βασάνοις συνεχομένους καὶ δαιμονιζομένους καὶ σεληνιαζομένους καὶ παραλυτικοὺς καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς 4:24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
4:25 et secutæ sunt eum turbæ multæ de Galilæa, et Decapoli, et de Jerosolymis, et de Judæa, et de trans Jordanem. 4:25 καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ ὄχλοι πολλοὶ ἀπὸ τῆς γαλιλαίας καὶ δεκαπόλεως καὶ ἱεροσολύμων καὶ ἰουδαίας καὶ πέραν τοῦ ἰορδάνου 4:25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
