MATTHEW CHAPTER 23

Latin VulgateGreek Textus ReceptusEnglish King James
Matthew 23:1 Tunc Jesus locutus est ad turbas, et ad discipulos suos, Matthew 23:1 τότε ὁ ἰησοῦς ἐλάλησεν τοῖς ὄχλοις καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Matthew 23:1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
23:2 dicens: Super cathedram Moysi sederunt scribæ et pharisæi. 23:2 λέγων ἐπὶ τῆς μωσέως καθέδρας ἐκάθισαν οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ φαρισαῖοι 23:2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
23:3 Omnia ergo quæcumque dixerint vobis, servate, et facite: secundum opera vero eorum nolite facere: dicunt enim, et non faciunt. 23:3 πάντα οὖν ὅσα ἂν εἴπωσιν ὑμῖν τηρεῖν τηρεῖτε καὶ ποιεῖτε κατὰ δὲ τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν μὴ ποιεῖτε λέγουσιν γὰρ καὶ οὐ ποιοῦσιν 23:3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
23:4 δεσμεύουσιν γὰρ φορτία βαρέα καὶ δυσβάστακτα καὶ ἐπιτιθέασιν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὤμους τῶν ἀνθρώπων τῷ δὲ δακτύλῳ αὐτῶν οὐ θέλουσιν κινῆσαι αὐτά 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
23:5 πάντα δὲ τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν ποιοῦσιν πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι τοῖς ἀνθρώποις πλατύνουσιν δὲ τὰ φυλακτήρια αὐτῶν καὶ μεγαλύνουσιν τὰ κράσπεδα τῶν ἱματίων αὐτῶν 23:5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
23:6 Amant autem primos recubitus in cœnis, et primas cathedras in synagogis, 23:6 φιλοῦσιν τὲ τὴν πρωτοκλισίαν ἐν τοῖς δείπνοις καὶ τὰς πρωτοκαθεδρίας ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς 23:6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
23:7 καὶ τοὺς ἀσπασμοὺς ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς καὶ καλεῖσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ῥαββί ῥαββί 23:7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
23:8 ὑμεῖς δὲ μὴ κληθῆτε ῥαββί εἷς γάρ ἐστιν ὑμῶν ὁ καθηγητής ὁ χριστὸς πάντες δὲ ὑμεῖς ἀδελφοί ἐστε 23:8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
23:9 καὶ πατέρα μὴ καλέσητε ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἷς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ πατὴρ ὑμῶν ὁ ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς 23:9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
Matthew 23:10 Nec vocemini magistri: quia magister vester unus est, Christus. Matthew 23:10 μηδὲ κληθῆτε καθηγηταί εἷς γὰρ ὑμῶν ἐστιν ὁ καθηγητὴς ὁ χριστός Matthew 23:10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
23:11 Qui major est vestrum, erit minister vester. 23:11 ὁ δὲ μείζων ὑμῶν ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος 23:11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
23:12 ὅστις δὲ ὑψώσει ἑαυτὸν ταπεινωθήσεται καὶ ὅστις ταπεινώσει ἑαυτὸν ὑψωθήσεται 23:12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
23:13 οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι κλείετε τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν οὐρανῶν ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων ὑμεῖς γὰρ οὐκ εἰσέρχεσθε οὐδὲ τοὺς εἰσερχομένους ἀφίετε εἰσελθεῖν 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
23:14 Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia comeditis domos viduarum, orationes longas orantes! propter hoc amplius accipietis judicium. 23:14 οὐαὶ δέ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι κατεσθίετε τὰς οἰκίας τῶν χηρῶν καὶ προφάσει μακρὰ προσευχόμενοι διὰ τοῦτο λήψεσθε περισσότερον κρίμα 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
23:15 οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι περιάγετε τὴν θάλασσαν καὶ τὴν ξηρὰν ποιῆσαι ἕνα προσήλυτον καὶ ὅταν γένηται ποιεῖτε αὐτὸν υἱὸν γεέννης διπλότερον ὑμῶν 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
23:16 οὐαὶ ὑμῖν ὁδηγοὶ τυφλοὶ οἱ λέγοντες ὃς ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ ναῷ οὐδέν ἐστιν ὃς δ᾽ ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ χρυσῷ τοῦ ναοῦ ὀφείλει 23:16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
23:17 μωροὶ καὶ τυφλοί τίς γὰρ μείζων ἐστίν ὁ χρυσὸς ἢ ὁ ναὸς ὁ ἁγιάζων τὸν χρυσόν 23:17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
23:18 καί ὃς ἐὰν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ οὐδέν ἐστιν ὃς δ᾽ ἂν ὀμόσῃ ἐν τῷ δώρῳ τῷ ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ ὀφείλει 23:18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
23:19 μωροὶ καὶ τυφλοί τί γὰρ μεῖζον τὸ δῶρον ἢ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ ἁγιάζον τὸ δῶρον 23:19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
Matthew 23:20 Qui ergo jurat in altari, jurat in eo, et in omnibus quæ super illud sunt. Matthew 23:20 ὁ οὖν ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ ὀμνύει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐν πάσιν τοῖς ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ Matthew 23:20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
23:21 Et quicumque juraverit in templo, jurat in illo, et in eo qui habitat in ipso: 23:21 καὶ ὁ ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ ναῷ ὀμνύει ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐν τῷ κατοικοῦντι αὐτόν 23:21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
23:22 et qui jurat in cælo, jurat in throno Dei, et in eo qui sedet super eum. 23:22 καὶ ὁ ὀμόσας ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ὀμνύει ἐν τῷ θρόνῳ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐν τῷ καθημένῳ ἐπάνω αὐτοῦ 23:22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23:23 οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι ἀποδεκατοῦτε τὸ ἡδύοσμον καὶ τὸ ἄνηθον καὶ τὸ κύμινον καὶ ἀφήκατε τὰ βαρύτερα τοῦ νόμου τὴν κρίσιν καὶ τὸν ἔλεον καὶ τὴν πίστιν ταῦτα ἔδει ποιῆσαι κἀκεῖνα μὴ ἀφιέναι 23:23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
23:24 Duces cæci, excolantes culicem, camelum autem glutientes. 23:24 ὁδηγοὶ τυφλοί οἱ διϋλίζοντες τὸν κώνωπα τὴν δὲ κάμηλον καταπίνοντες 23:24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
23:25 οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι καθαρίζετε τὸ ἔξωθεν τοῦ ποτηρίου καὶ τῆς παροψίδος ἔσωθεν δὲ γέμουσιν ἐξ ἁρπαγῆς καὶ ἀκρασίας 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
23:26 φαρισαῖε τυφλέ καθάρισον πρῶτον τὸ ἐντὸς τοῦ ποτηρίου καὶ τῆς παροψίδος ἵνα γένηται καὶ τὸ ἐκτὸς αὐτῶν καθαρόν 23:26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
23:27 Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, quia similes estis sepulchris dealbatis, quæ a foris parent hominibus speciosa, intus vero pleni sunt ossibus mortuorum, et omni spurcitia! 23:27 οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι παρομοιάζετε τάφοις κεκονιαμένοις οἵτινες ἔξωθεν μὲν φαίνονται ὡραῖοι ἔσωθεν δὲ γέμουσιν ὀστέων νεκρῶν καὶ πάσης ἀκαθαρσίας 23:27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
23:28 οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἔξωθεν μὲν φαίνεσθε τοῖς ἀνθρώποις δίκαιοι ἔσωθεν δέ μεστοὶ ἐστε ὑποκρίσεως καὶ ἀνομίας 23:28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
23:29 Væ vobis scribæ et pharisæi hypocritæ, qui ædificatis sepulchra prophetarum, et ornatis monumenta justorum, 23:29 οὐαὶ ὑμῖν γραμματεῖς καὶ φαρισαῖοι ὑποκριταί ὅτι οἰκοδομεῖτε τοὺς τάφους τῶν προφητῶν καὶ κοσμεῖτε τὰ μνημεῖα τῶν δικαίων 23:29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
Matthew 23:30 et dicitis: Si fuissemus in diebus patrum nostrorum, non essemus socii eorum in sanguine prophetarum! Matthew 23:30 καὶ λέγετε εἰ ἤμεν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν οὐκ ἂν ἤμεν κοινωνοὶ αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ αἵματι τῶν προφητῶν Matthew 23:30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
23:31 itaque testimonio estis vobismetipsis, quia filii estis eorum, qui prophetas occiderunt. 23:31 ὥστε μαρτυρεῖτε ἑαυτοῖς ὅτι υἱοί ἐστε τῶν φονευσάντων τοὺς προφήτας 23:31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
23:32 Et vos implete mensuram patrum vestrorum. 23:32 καὶ ὑμεῖς πληρώσατε τὸ μέτρον τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν 23:32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
23:33 Serpentes, genimina viperarum, quomodo fugietis a judicio gehennæ? 23:33 ὄφεις γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν πῶς φύγητε ἀπὸ τῆς κρίσεως τῆς γεέννης 23:33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
23:34 Ideo ecce ego mitto ad vos prophetas, et sapientes, et scribas, et ex illis occidetis, et crucifigetis, et ex eis flagellabitis in synagogis vestris, et persequemini de civitate in civitatem: 23:34 διὰ τοῦτο ἰδού ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω πρὸς ὑμᾶς προφήτας καὶ σοφοὺς καὶ γραμματεῖς καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀποκτενεῖτε καὶ σταυρώσετε καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν μαστιγώσετε ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς ὑμῶν καὶ διώξετε ἀπὸ πόλεως εἰς πόλιν 23:34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
23:35 ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis justus, qui effusus est super terram, a sanguine Abel justi usque ad sanguinem Zachariæ, filii Barachiæ, quem occidistis inter templum et altare. 23:35 ὅπως ἔλθῃ ἐφ᾽ ὑμᾶς πᾶν αἷμα δίκαιον ἐκχυνόμενον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἀπὸ τοῦ αἵματος ἅβελ τοῦ δικαίου ἕως τοῦ αἵματος ζαχαρίου υἱοῦ βαραχίου ὃν ἐφονεύσατε μεταξὺ τοῦ ναοῦ καὶ τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου 23:35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
23:36 Amen dico vobis, venient hæc omnia super generationem istam. 23:36 ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἥξει ταῦτα πάντα ἐπὶ τὴν γενεὰν ταύτην 23:36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
23:37 ἰερουσαλὴμ ἰερουσαλήμ ἡ ἀποκτείνουσα τοὺς προφήτας καὶ λιθοβολοῦσα τοὺς ἀπεσταλμένους πρὸς αὐτήν ποσάκις ἠθέλησα ἐπισυναγαγεῖν τὰ τέκνα σου ὃν τρόπον ἐπισυνάγει ὄρνις τὰ νοσσία ἑαυτῆς ὑπὸ τὰς πτέρυγας καὶ οὐκ ἠθελήσατε 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
23:38 Ecce relinquetur vobis domus vestra deserta. 23:38 ἰδού ἀφίεται ὑμῖν ὁ οἶκος ὑμῶν ἔρημος 23:38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
23:39 λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν οὐ μή με ἴδητε ἀπ᾽ ἄρτι ἕως ἂν εἴπητε εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου 23:39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
