MATTHEW CHAPTER 22

Latin VulgateGreek Textus ReceptusEnglish King James
Matthew 22:1 Et respondens Jesus, dixit iterum in parabolis eis, dicens: Matthew 22:1 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ἰησοῦς πάλιν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἐν παραβολαῖς λέγων Matthew 22:1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said,
22:2 Simile factum est regnum cælorum homini regi, qui fecit nuptias filio suo. 22:2 ημοιώθη ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ βασιλεῖ ὅστις ἐποίησεν γάμους τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ 22:2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son,
22:3 Et misit servos suos vocare invitatos ad nuptias, et nolebant venire. 22:3 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ καλέσαι τοὺς κεκλημένους εἰς τοὺς γάμους καὶ οὐκ ἤθελον ἐλθεῖν 22:3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come.
22:4 Iterum misit alios servos, dicens: Dicite invitatis: Ecce prandium meum paravi, tauri mei et altilia occisa sunt, et omnia parata: venite ad nuptias. 22:4 πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους λέγων εἴπατε τοῖς κεκλημένοις ἰδού τὸ ἄριστόν μου ἡτοίμασα οἱ ταῦροί μου καὶ τὰ σιτιστὰ τεθυμένα καὶ πάντα ἕτοιμα δεῦτε εἰς τοὺς γάμους 22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.
22:5 Illi autem neglexerunt: et abierunt, alius in villam suam, alius vero ad negotiationem suam: 22:5 οἱ δὲ ἀμελήσαντες ἀπῆλθον ὁ μὲν εἰς τὸν ἴδιον ἀγρόν ὁ δὲ εἰς τὴν ἐμπορίαν αὐτοῦ 22:5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise:
22:6 reliqui vero tenuerunt servos ejus, et contumeliis affectos occiderunt. 22:6 οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ κρατήσαντες τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὕβρισαν καὶ ἀπέκτειναν 22:6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.
22:7 Rex autem cum audisset, iratus est: et missis exercitibus suis, perdidit homicidas illos, et civitatem illorum succendit. 22:7 ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς ὠργίσθη καὶ πέμψας τὰ στρατεύματα αὐτοῦ ἀπώλεσεν τοὺς φονεῖς ἐκείνους καὶ τὴν πόλιν αὐτῶν ἐνέπρησεν 22:7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.
22:8 Tunc ait servis suis: Nuptiæ quidem paratæ sunt, sed qui invitati erant, non fuerunt digni: 22:8 τότε λέγει τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ ὁ μὲν γάμος ἕτοιμός ἐστιν οἱ δὲ κεκλημένοι οὐκ ἦσαν ἄξιοι 22:8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy.
22:9 ite ergo ad exitus viarum, et quoscumque inveneritis, vocate ad nuptias. 22:9 πορεύεσθε οὖν ἐπὶ τὰς διεξόδους τῶν ὁδῶν καὶ ὅσους ἂν εὕρητε καλέσατε εἰς τοὺς γάμους 22:9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage.
Matthew 22:10 Et egressi servi ejus in vias, congregaverunt omnes quos invenerunt, malos et bonos: et impletæ sunt nuptiæ discumbentium. Matthew 22:10 καὶ ἐξελθόντες οἱ δοῦλοι ἐκεῖνοι εἰς τὰς ὁδοὺς συνήγαγον πάντας ὅσους εὗρον πονηρούς τε καὶ ἀγαθούς καὶ ἐπλήσθη ὁ γάμος ἀνακειμένων Matthew 22:10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.
22:11 Intravit autem rex ut videret discumbentes, et vidit ibi hominem non vestitum veste nuptiali. 22:11 εἰσελθὼν δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς θεάσασθαι τοὺς ἀνακειμένους εἶδεν ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἐνδεδυμένον ἔνδυμα γάμου 22:11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment:
22:12 Et ait illi: Amice, quomodo huc intrasti non habens vestem nuptialem? At ille obmutuit. 22:12 καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ ἑταῖρε πῶς εἰσῆλθες ὧδε μὴ ἔχων ἔνδυμα γάμου ὁ δὲ ἐφιμώθη 22:12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless.
22:13 Tunc dicit rex ministris: Ligatis manibus et pedibus ejus, mittite eum in tenebras exteriores: ibi erit fletus et stridor dentium. 22:13 τότε εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῖς διακόνοις δήσαντες αὐτοῦ πόδας καὶ χεῖρας ἄρατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἐκβάλετε εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
22:14 Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi. 22:14 πολλοὶ γάρ εἰσιν κλητοὶ ὀλίγοι δὲ ἐκλεκτοί 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
22:15 Tunc abeuntes pharisæi, consilium inierunt ut caperent eum in sermone. 22:15 τότε πορευθέντες οἱ φαρισαῖοι συμβούλιον ἔλαβον ὅπως αὐτὸν παγιδεύσωσιν ἐν λόγῳ 22:15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk.
22:16 Et mittunt ei discipulos suos cum Herodianis, dicentes: Magister, scimus quia verax es, et viam Dei in veritate doces, et non est tibi cura de aliquo: non enim respicis personam hominum: 22:16 καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτῶν μετὰ τῶν ἡρῳδιανῶν λέγοντες διδάσκαλε οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀληθὴς εἶ καὶ τὴν ὁδὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν ἀληθείᾳ διδάσκεις καὶ οὐ μέλει σοι περὶ οὐδενός οὐ γὰρ βλέπεις εἰς πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπων 22:16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.
22:17 dic ergo nobis quid tibi videtur, licet censum dare Cæsari, an non? 22:17 εἰπὲ οὖν ἡμῖν τί σοι δοκεῖ ἔξεστιν δοῦναι κῆνσον καίσαρι ἢ οὔ 22:17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
22:18 Cognita autem Jesus nequitia eorum, ait: Quid me tentatis, hypocritæ? 22:18 γνοὺς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς τὴν πονηρίαν αὐτῶν εἶπεν τί με πειράζετε ὑποκριταί 22:18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
22:19 ostendite mihi numisma census. At illi obtulerunt ei denarium. 22:19 ἐπιδείξατέ μοι τὸ νόμισμα τοῦ κήνσου οἱ δὲ προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δηνάριον 22:19 Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny.
Matthew 22:20 Et ait illis Jesus: Cujus est imago hæc, et superscriptio? Matthew 22:20 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς τίνος ἡ εἰκὼν αὕτη καὶ ἡ ἐπιγραφή Matthew 22:20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?
22:21 Dicunt ei: Cæsaris. Tunc ait illis: Reddite ergo quæ sunt Cæsaris, Cæsari: et quæ sunt Dei, Deo. 22:21 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ καίσαρος τότε λέγει αὐτοῖς ἀπόδοτε οὖν τὰ καίσαρος καίσαρι καὶ τὰ τοῦ θεοῦ τῷ θεῷ 22:21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.
22:22 Et audientes mirati sunt, et relicto eo abierunt. 22:22 καὶ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν καὶ ἀφέντες αὐτὸν ἀπῆλθον 22:22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
22:23 In illo die accesserunt ad eum sadducæi, qui dicunt non esse resurrectionem: et interrogaverunt eum, 22:23 ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ σαδδουκαῖοι οἵ λέγοντες μὴ εἶναι ἀνάστασιν καὶ ἐπηρώτησαν αὐτὸν 22:23 The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him,
22:24 dicentes: Magister, Moyses dixit: Si quis mortuus fuerit non habens filium, ut ducat frater ejus uxorem illius, et suscitet semen fratri suo. 22:24 λέγοντες διδάσκαλε μωσῆς εἶπεν ἐάν τις ἀποθάνῃ μὴ ἔχων τέκνα ἐπιγαμβρεύσει ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀναστήσει σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ 22:24 Saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
22:25 Erant autem apud nos septem fratres: et primus, uxore ducta, defunctus est: et non habens semen, reliquit uxorem suam fratri suo. 22:25 ἦσαν δὲ παρ᾽ ἡμῖν ἑπτὰ ἀδελφοί καὶ ὁ πρῶτος γάμησας ἐτελεύτησεν καὶ μὴ ἔχων σπέρμα ἀφῆκεν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ 22:25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother:
22:26 Similiter secundus, et tertius usque ad septimum. 22:26 ὁμοίως καὶ ὁ δεύτερος καὶ ὁ τρίτος ἕως τῶν ἑπτά 22:26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.
22:27 Novissime autem omnium et mulier defuncta est. 22:27 ὕστερον δὲ πάντων ἀπέθανεν καὶ ἡ γυνή 22:27 And last of all the woman died also.
22:28 In resurrectione ergo cujus erit de septem uxor? omnes enim habuerunt eam. 22:28 ἐν τῇ οὖν ἀναστάσει τίνος τῶν ἑπτὰ ἔσται γυνή πάντες γὰρ ἔσχον αὐτήν 22:28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.
22:29 Respondens autem Jesus, ait illis: Erratis nescientes Scripturas, neque virtutem Dei. 22:29 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς πλανᾶσθε μὴ εἰδότες τὰς γραφὰς μηδὲ τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ θεοῦ 22:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.
Matthew 22:30 In resurrectione enim neque nubent, neque nubentur: sed erunt sicut angeli Dei in cælo. Matthew 22:30 ἐν γὰρ τῇ ἀναστάσει οὔτε γαμοῦσιν οὔτε ἐκγαμίζονται ἀλλ᾽ ὡς ἄγγελοι τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν οὐρανῷ εἰσιν Matthew 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
22:31 De resurrectione autem mortuorum non legistis quod dictum est a Deo dicente vobis: 22:31 περὶ δὲ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τῶν νεκρῶν οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε τὸ ῥηθὲν ὑμῖν ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ λέγοντος 22:31 But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
22:32 Ego sum Deus Abraham, et Deus Isaac, et Deus Jacob? Non est Deus mortuorum, sed viventium. 22:32 ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ θεὸς ἀβραὰμ καὶ ὁ θεὸς ἰσαὰκ καὶ ὁ θεὸς ἰακώβ οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ θεὸς φεὸς νεκρῶν ἀλλὰ ζώντων 22:32 I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
22:33 Et audientes turbæ, mirabantur in doctrina ejus. 22:33 καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ὄχλοι ἐξεπλήσσοντο ἐπὶ τῇ διδαχῇ αὐτοῦ 22:33 And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.
22:34 Pharisæi autem audientes quod silentium imposuisset sadducæis, convenerunt in unum: 22:34 οἱ δὲ φαρισαῖοι ἀκούσαντες ὅτι ἐφίμωσεν τοὺς σαδδουκαίους συνήχθησαν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό 22:34 But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.
22:35 et interrogavit eum unus ex eis legis doctor, tentans eum: 22:35 καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν εἷς ἐξ αὐτῶν νομικὸς πειράζων αὐτὸν καὶ λέγων 22:35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,
22:36 Magister, quod est mandatum magnum in lege? 22:36 διδάσκαλε ποία ἐντολὴ μεγάλη ἐν τῷ νόμῳ 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
22:37 Ait illi Jesus: Diliges Dominum Deum tuum ex toto corde tuo, et in tota anima tua, et in tota mente tua. 22:37 ὁ δὲ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν θεόν σου ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ καρδίᾳ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ σου 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
22:38 Hoc est maximum, et primum mandatum. 22:38 αὕτη ἐστὶν πρώτη καὶ μεγάλη ἐντολή 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
22:39 Secundum autem simile est huic: Diliges proximum tuum, sicut teipsum. 22:39 δευτέρα δὲ ὁμοία αὐτῇ ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Matthew 22:40 In his duobus mandatis universa lex pendet, et prophetæ. Matthew 22:40 ἐν ταύταις ταῖς δυσὶν ἐντολαῖς ὅλος ὁ νόμος καὶ οἱ προφῆται κρέμανται Matthew 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
22:41 Congregatis autem pharisæis, interrogavit eos Jesus, 22:41 συνηγμένων δὲ τῶν φαρισαίων ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτοὺς ὁ ἰησοῦς 22:41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
22:42 dicens: Quid vobis videtur de Christo? cujus filius est? Dicunt ei: David. 22:42 λέγων τί ὑμῖν δοκεῖ περὶ τοῦ χριστοῦ τίνος υἱός ἐστιν λέγουσιν αὐτῷ τοῦ δαβίδ 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
22:43 Ait illis: Quomodo ergo David in spiritu vocat eum Dominum, dicens: 22:43 λέγει αὐτοῖς πῶς οὖν δαβὶδ ἐν πνεύματι κύριον αὐτὸν καλεῖ λέγων 22:43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
22:44 Dixit Dominus Domino meo: Sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum? 22:44 εἶπεν ὁ κύριος τῷ κυρίῳ μου κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου 22:44 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
22:45 Si ergo David vocat eum Dominum, quomodo filius ejus est? 22:45 εἰ οὖν δαβὶδ καλεῖ αὐτὸν κύριον πῶς υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐστιν 22:45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
22:46 Et nemo poterat ei respondere verbum: neque ausus fuit quisquam ex illa die eum amplius interrogare. 22:46 καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐδύνατο αὐτῷ ἀποκριθῆναι λόγον οὐδὲ ἐτόλμησέν τις ἀπ᾽ ἐκείνης τῆς ἡμέρας ἐπερωτῆσαι αὐτὸν οὐκέτι 22:46 And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
