MATTHEW CHAPTER 21

Latin VulgateGreek Textus ReceptusEnglish King James
Matthew 21:1 Et cum appropinquassent Jerosolymis, et venissent Bethphage ad montem Oliveti: tunc Jesus misit duos discipulos, Matthew 21:1 καὶ ὅτε ἤγγισαν εἰς ἱεροσόλυμα καὶ ἦλθον εἰς βηθφαγὴ πρὸς τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν τότε ὁ ἰησοῦς ἀπέστειλεν δύο μαθητὰς Matthew 21:1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,
21:2 dicens eis: Ite in castellum, quod contra vos est, et statim invenietis asinam alligatam, et pullum cum ea: solvite, et adducite mihi: 21:2 λέγων αὐτοῖς πορεύθητε εἰς τὴν κώμην τὴν ἀπέναντι ὑμῶν καὶ εὐθέως εὑρήσετε ὄνον δεδεμένην καὶ πῶλον μετ᾽ αὐτῆς λύσαντες ἀγάγετέ μοι 21:2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.
21:3 καὶ ἐάν τις ὑμῖν εἴπῃ τι ἐρεῖτε ὅτι ὁ κύριος αὐτῶν χρείαν ἔχει εὐθέως δὲ ἀποστελεῖ αὐτούς 21:3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.
21:4 Hoc autem totum factum est, ut adimpleretur quod dictum est per prophetam dicentem: 21:4 τοῦτο δὲ ὅλον γέγονεν ἵνα πληρωθῇ τὸ ῥηθὲν διὰ τοῦ προφήτου λέγοντος 21:4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
21:5 [Dicite filiæ Sion: Ecce rex tuus venit tibi mansuetus, sedens super asinam, et pullum filium subjugalis.] 21:5 εἴπατε τῇ θυγατρὶ σιών ἰδού ὁ βασιλεύς σου ἔρχεταί σοι πραῢς καὶ ἐπιβεβηκὼς ἐπὶ ὄνον καὶ πῶλον υἱὸν ὑποζυγίου 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
21:6 Euntes autem discipuli fecerunt sicut præcepit illis Jesus. 21:6 πορευθέντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ καὶ ποιήσαντες καθὼς προσέταξεν αὐτοῖς ὁ ἰησοῦς 21:6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,
21:7 Et adduxerunt asinam, et pullum: et imposuerunt super eos vestimenta sua, et eum desuper sedere fecerunt. 21:7 ἤγαγον τὴν ὄνον καὶ τὸν πῶλον καὶ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπάνω αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπεκάθισεν ἐπάνω αὐτῶν 21:7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.
21:8 Plurima autem turba straverunt vestimenta sua in via: alii autem cædebant ramos de arboribus, et sternebant in via: 21:8 ὁ δὲ πλεῖστος ὄχλος ἔστρωσαν ἑαυτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἄλλοι δὲ ἔκοπτον κλάδους ἀπὸ τῶν δένδρων καὶ ἐστρώννυον ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ 21:8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.
21:9 turbæ autem, quæ præcedebant, et quæ sequebantur, clamabant, dicentes: Hosanna filio David: benedictus, qui venit in nomine Domini: hosanna in altissimis. 21:9 οἱ δὲ ὄχλοι οἱ προάγοντες καὶ οἱ ἀκολουθοῦντες ἔκραζον λέγοντες ησαννὰ τῷ υἱῷ δαβίδ εὐλογημένος ὁ ἐρχόμενος ἐν ὀνόματι κυρίου ησαννὰ ἐν τοῖς ὑψίστοις 21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
Matthew 21:10 καὶ εἰσελθόντος αὐτοῦ εἰς ἱεροσόλυμα ἐσείσθη πᾶσα ἡ πόλις λέγουσα τίς ἐστιν οὗτος Matthew 21:10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
21:11 Populi autem dicebant: Hic est Jesus propheta a Nazareth Galilææ. 21:11 οἱ δὲ ὄχλοι ἔλεγον οὗτός ἐστιν ἰησοῦς ὁ προφήτης ὁ ἀπὸ ναζαρὲτ τῆς γαλιλαίας 21:11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.
21:12 Et intravit Jesus in templum Dei, et ejiciebat omnes vendentes et ementes in templo, et mensas numulariorum, et cathedras vendentium columbas evertit: 21:12 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν ὁ ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐξέβαλεν πάντας τοὺς πωλοῦντας καὶ ἀγοράζοντας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ τὰς τραπέζας τῶν κολλυβιστῶν κατέστρεψεν καὶ τὰς καθέδρας τῶν πωλούντων τὰς περιστεράς 21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
21:13 καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς γέγραπται ὁ οἶκός μου οἶκος προσευχῆς κληθήσεται ὑμεῖς δὲ αὐτὸν ἐποιήσατε σπήλαιον λῃστῶν 21:13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
21:14 καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ τυφλοὶ καὶ χωλοὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν αὐτούς 21:14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
21:15 Videntes autem principes sacerdotum et scribæ mirabilia quæ fecit, et pueros clamantes in templo, et dicentes: Hosanna filio David: indignati sunt, 21:15 ἰδόντες δὲ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς τὰ θαυμάσια ἃ ἐποίησεν καὶ τοὺς παῖδας κράζοντας ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καὶ λέγοντας ησαννὰ τῷ υἱῷ δαβίδ ἠγανάκτησαν 21:15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,
21:16 καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ ἀκούεις τί οὗτοι λέγουσιν ὁ δὲ ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς ναί οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ὅτι ἐκ στόματος νηπίων καὶ θηλαζόντων κατηρτίσω αἶνον 21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
21:17 Et relictis illis, abiit foras extra civitatem in Bethaniam: ibique mansit. 21:17 καὶ καταλιπὼν αὐτοὺς ἐξῆλθεν ἔξω τῆς πόλεως εἰς βηθανίαν καὶ ηὐλίσθη ἐκεῖ 21:17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.
21:18 Mane autem revertens in civitatem, esuriit. 21:18 πρωΐας δὲ ἐπανάγων εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἐπείνασεν 21:18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.
21:19 καὶ ἰδὼν συκῆν μίαν ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ ἠλθεν ἐπ᾽ αὐτήν καὶ οὐδὲν εὗρεν ἐν αὐτῇ εἰ μὴ φύλλα μόνον καὶ λέγει αὐτῇ μηκέτι ἐκ σοῦ καρπὸς γένηται εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ ἐξηράνθη παραχρῆμα ἡ συκῆ 21:19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.
Matthew 21:20 Et videntes discipuli, mirati sunt, dicentes: Quomodo continuo aruit? Matthew 21:20 καὶ ἰδόντες οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐθαύμασαν λέγοντες πῶς παραχρῆμα ἐξηράνθη ἡ συκῆ Matthew 21:20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!
21:21 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ἐὰν ἔχητε πίστιν καὶ μὴ διακριθῆτε οὐ μόνον τὸ τῆς συκῆς ποιήσετε ἀλλὰ κἂν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ εἴπητε ἄρθητι καὶ βλήθητι εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν γενήσεται 21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
21:22 Et omnia quæcumque petieritis in oratione credentes, accipietis. 21:22 καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἂν αἰτήσητε ἐν τῇ προσευχῇ πιστεύοντες λήψεσθε 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.
21:23 καὶ ἐλθόντι αὐτῷ εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν προσῆλθον αὐτῷ διδάσκοντι οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τοῦ λαοῦ λέγοντες ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιεῖς καὶ τίς σοι ἔδωκεν τὴν ἐξουσίαν ταύτην 21:23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
21:24 Respondens Jesus dixit eis: Interrogabo vos et ego unum sermonem: quem si dixeritis mihi, et ego vobis dicam in qua potestate hæc facio. 21:24 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἐρωτήσω ὑμᾶς κἀγὼ λόγον ἕνα ὃν ἐὰν εἴπητέ μοι κἀγὼ ὑμῖν ἐρῶ ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ 21:24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
21:25 Baptismus Joannis unde erat? e cælo, an ex hominibus? 21:25 τὸ βάπτισμα ἰωάννου πόθεν ἦν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἢ ἐξ ἀνθρώπων οἱ δὲ διελογίζοντο παρ᾽ ἑαυτοῖς λέγοντες ἐὰν εἴπωμεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐρεῖ ἡμῖν διατί οὖν οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
21:26 ἐὰν δὲ εἴπωμεν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων φοβούμεθα τὸν ὄχλον πάντες γὰρ ἔχουσιν τὸν ἰωάννην ὡς προφήτην 21:26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.
21:27 Et respondentes Jesu, dixerunt: Nescimus. Ait illis et ipse: Nec ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc facio. 21:27 καὶ ἀποκριθέντες τῷ ἰησοῦ εἶπον οὐκ οἴδαμεν ἔφη αὐτοῖς καὶ αὐτός οὐδὲ ἐγὼ λέγω ὑμῖν ἐν ποίᾳ ἐξουσίᾳ ταῦτα ποιῶ 21:27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
21:28 Quid autem vobis videtur? Homo quidam habebat duos filios, et accedens ad primum, dixit: Fili, vade hodie, operare in vinea mea. A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.
21:29 Ille autem respondens, ait: Nolo. Postea autem, pœnitentia motus, abiit. 21:29 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν οὐ θέλω ὕστερον δὲ μεταμεληθεὶς ἀπῆλθεν 21:29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.
Matthew 21:30 Accedens autem ad alterum, dixit similiter. At ille respondens, ait: Eo, domine, et non ivit: Matthew 21:30 καὶ προσελθὼν τῷ δευτέρῳ εἶπεν ὡσαύτως ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν ἐγώ κύριε καὶ οὐκ ἀπῆλθεν Matthew 21:30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
21:31 quis ex duobus fecit voluntatem patris? Dicunt ei: Primus. Dicit illis Jesus: Amen dico vobis, quia publicani et meretrices præcedent vos in regnum Dei. 21:31 τίς ἐκ τῶν δύο ἐποίησεν τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πατρός λέγουσιν αὐτῷ ὁ πρῶτος λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ ἰησοῦς ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι οἱ τελῶναι καὶ αἱ πόρναι προάγουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ 21:31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
21:32 Venit enim ad vos Joannes in via justitiæ, et non credidistis ei: publicani autem et meretrices crediderunt ei: vos autem videntes nec pœnitentiam habuistis postea, ut crederetis ei. 21:32 ἦλθεν γὰρ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἰωάννης ἐν ὁδῷ δικαιοσύνης καὶ οὐκ ἐπιστεύσατε αὐτῷ οἱ δὲ τελῶναι καὶ αἱ πόρναι ἐπίστευσαν αὐτῷ ὑμεῖς δὲ ἰδόντες οὐ μετεμελήθητε ὕστερον τοῦ πιστεῦσαι αὐτῷ 21:32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.
21:33 ἄλλην παραβολὴν ἀκούσατε ἄνθρωπος τις ἦν οἰκοδεσπότης ὅστις ἐφύτευσεν ἀμπελῶνα καὶ φραγμὸν αὐτῷ περιέθηκεν καὶ ὤρυξεν ἐν αὐτῷ ληνὸν καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν πύργον καὶ ἐξέδοτο αὐτὸν γεωργοῖς καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν 21:33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:
21:34 Cum autem tempus fructuum appropinquasset, misit servos suos ad agricolas, ut acciperent fructus ejus. 21:34 ὅτε δὲ ἤγγισεν ὁ καιρὸς τῶν καρπῶν ἀπέστειλεν τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ πρὸς τοὺς γεωργοὺς λαβεῖν τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτοῦ 21:34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.
21:35 Et agricolæ, apprehensis servis ejus, alium ceciderunt, alium occiderunt, alium vero lapidaverunt. 21:35 καὶ λαβόντες οἱ γεωργοὶ τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὃν μὲν ἔδειραν ὃν δὲ ἀπέκτειναν ὃν δὲ ἐλιθοβόλησαν 21:35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
21:36 Iterum misit alios servos plures prioribus, et fecerunt illis similiter. 21:36 πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους πλείονας τῶν πρώτων καὶ ἐποίησαν αὐτοῖς ὡσαύτως 21:36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.
21:37 ὕστερον δὲ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ λέγων ἐντραπήσονται τὸν υἱόν μου 21:37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
21:38 οἱ δὲ γεωργοὶ ἰδόντες τὸν υἱὸν εἶπον ἐν ἑαυτοῖς οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ κληρονόμος δεῦτε ἀποκτείνωμεν αὐτὸν καὶ κατάσχωμεν τὴν κληρονομίαν αὐτοῦ 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.
21:39 Et apprehensum eum ejecerunt extra vineam, et occiderunt. 21:39 καὶ λαβόντες αὐτὸν ἐξέβαλον ἔξω τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος καὶ ἀπέκτειναν 21:39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.
Matthew 21:40 Cum ergo venerit dominus vineæ, quid faciet agricolis illis? Matthew 21:40 ὅταν οὖν ἔλθῃ ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τί ποιήσει τοῖς γεωργοῖς ἐκείνοις Matthew 21:40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?
21:41 Aiunt illi: Malos male perdet: et vineam suam locabit aliis agricolis, qui reddant ei fructum temporibus suis. 21:41 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ κακοὺς κακῶς ἀπολέσει αὐτούς καὶ τὸν ἀμπελῶνα ἐκδόσεται ἄλλοις γεωργοῖς οἵτινες ἀποδώσουσιν αὐτῷ τοὺς καρποὺς ἐν τοῖς καιροῖς αὐτῶν 21:41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.
21:42 Dicit illis Jesus: Numquam legistis in Scripturis: [Lapidem quem reprobaverunt ædificantes, hic factus est in caput anguli: a Domino factum est istud, et est mirabile in oculis nostris?] 21:42 λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ ἰησοῦς οὐδέποτε ἀνέγνωτε ἐν ταῖς γραφαῖς λίθον ὃν ἀπεδοκίμασαν οἱ οἰκοδομοῦντες οὗτος ἐγενήθη εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας παρὰ κυρίου ἐγένετο αὕτη καὶ ἔστιν θαυμαστὴ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ἡμῶν 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
21:43 Ideo dico vobis, quia auferetur a vobis regnum Dei, et dabitur genti facienti fructus ejus. 21:43 διὰ τοῦτο λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι ἀρθήσεται ἀφ᾽ ὑμῶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ δοθήσεται ἔθνει ποιοῦντι τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτῆς 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.
21:44 καὶ ὁ πεσὼν ἐπὶ τὸν λίθον τοῦτον συνθλασθήσεται ἐφ᾽ ὃν δ᾽ ἂν πέσῃ λικμήσει αὐτόν 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
21:45 καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ φαρισαῖοι τὰς παραβολὰς αὐτοῦ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι περὶ αὐτῶν λέγει 21:45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.
21:46 Et quærentes eum tenere, timuerunt turbas: quoniam sicut prophetam eum habebant. 21:46 καὶ ζητοῦντες αὐτὸν κρατῆσαι ἐφοβήθησαν τοὺς ὄχλους ἐπειδὴ ὡς προφήτην αὐτὸν εἶχον 21:46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.
